Oct. 09, 2013, 10:14 a.m. (ET)

The 2013 Premier Volleyball League champion, Iowa Ice, will open the FIVB Women's Club World Championships against the South American club champion Unilever Volei of Brazil tonight in Zurich (5:30 p.m. local, 10:30 a.m. in Des Moines) at the Saalsportshalle.

Fans can watch the match live via the FIVB streaming feed and live scoring.

Team Iowa Ice is made up post-grad athletes and many have ties to Iowa, including three Iowa State University alumni (Caitlin Mahoney (Omaha, Neb.), Carly Jenson (Omaha, Neb.) and Kaylee Manns (Topeka, Kan.); Drake University (Angela Bys); University of Iowa (Megan Schipper) ; Iowa State University (Amanda Craig) and Grand View University (Devon Jensen).

In May of 2013, Iowa Ice won the 2013 PVL Championship over Team Florida Wave with Schipper, Brittany Brimmage (East St. Louis, Ill./University of Missouri) and Justine Landi (Coral Springs, Fla./University of Louisville) named to the all-tournament team.

The Ice will meet a Brazilian team that features a mix of young and veteran players, including three current National Team members, one from Brazil (Gabi Guimaraes), Serbia (Brankic Mihajlovic) and Canada (Sarah Pavan). The veterans include Olympians setter Fofão De Souza Pinto and libero Fabí Oliveira of Brazil and Mihajlovic of Serbia. The team’s youngest player, 20-year-old Guimaraes, recently added to the Brazilian National Team was the team’s leading scorer at the South American Club Championships last May.

“We’re definitely outsized, but we don’t see that as a big disadvantage,” said team captain Schipper. “We’re looking forward to it and just excited about playing the high level of volleyball that these teams are going to bring to us.

“I think there’s a little bit of pressure, but it’s good pressure and it’s just going to make us work that much harder and play a little bit better. We want to represent our country well as do the other teams here, so we’re just hoping to put on a good show.”

Iowa Ice and Unilever Volei and Vakifbank Istanbul of Turkey make up Pool B. The U.S. team will face Vakifbank on Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. local time. Pool A consists of Guangdong Evergrande of China, Kenya Prisons of Kenya and Volero Zurich of Switzerland. The top two teams from each pool move on.

Team Iowa Ice is one of the 15 teams which competed in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) in 2013, a grassroots professional volleyball league that began in 2012. Sanctioned by USA Volleyball, the PVL is made up of teams from among the 40 regional volleyball associations across the U.S. For more information about the PVL, click here.
