COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 25, 2013) – Three U.S. beach teams captured medals on Sunday at the 10th stop of the 2013 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit in San Jose, Costa Rica.
In the men’s gold- match, the U.S. men’s beach team of John Hyden (San Diego) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) dropped their only match of the event to Mexico’s Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen (21-16, 19-21, 15-12), to take second place. With the victory, Mexico set a new all-time NORCECA record of victories in a season.
For the women’s finals, the U.S. team of Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) also finished with a silver medal when Kacie MacTavish and Caleigh Whitaker of Canada outlasted the Americans 2-1 (21-17, 19-21, 15-11).
The U.S. team of Traci Weamer (Upland, Clif.) and Allison Daley (Grass Valley, Calif) swept Karen Cope and Natalia Alfaro of Costa Rica (21-16, 21-15) to pick up the women’s bronze medal.
Falling shy of a medal was the U.S. team of Montgomery and Drost who lost to Mexico’s Ontiveros and Virgen (21-17, 18-21, 9-15) in the semis.
The last leg of the tour is set for Nov. 27 – Dec. 2 in Trinidad and Tobago.
