U.S. Men's Update: Lawson Gets in the Act
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 1, 2013) – U.S. women’s volleyball players Norisha Campbell and Jane Collymore have both received recognition for their singing talents.

Now U.S. men’s volleyball player Brad Lawson (Honolulu) is joining the chorus.
Lawson has been heard singing the U.S. national anthem at volleyball matches.

CEV Champions League
Zenit Kazan, which includes outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), defeated Russian rival Lokomotiv Novosibirsk 14-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-19, in a CEV Champions League match on Oct. 30. Anderson led his team with 18 points on 15 kills, one block and two aces.
In other Champions League matches this week, middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and France’s Tours Volleyball defeated Italy’s Copra Elior Piacenza, 25-19, 27-29, 25-13, 22-25, 15-10 on Oct. 30. Jablonsky finished with 16 points on 13 kills, one block and two aces. Smith added eight points on six kills, one block and one ace.
Setter Kawika Shoji, outside hitter Scott Touzinsky and Germany’s Berlin Recycling Volleys defeated Turkey’s Arkas Izmir, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-21 on Oct. 29. Touzinsky scored 14 points on 13 kills and one block. He was also credited with 20 receptions, 70 percent positive. Shoji scored six points on three kills, two blocks and one ace and set Berlin to a 52.2 kill percent and a .435 hitting efficiency.
Libero Erik Shoji (Honolulu), middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) and Austria’s Hypo Tirol Innsbruck fell to Poland’s Jastrzebski Wegiel, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 on Oct. 29. Hein scored five points on four kills and one block. Shoji was credited with 16 receptions, 63 percent positive.
Outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Belgium’s Noliko Maaseik defeated Czech Republic’s VK Ostrava, which includes U.S. libero Nicholas Castello, 25-10, 25-20, 25-15 on Oct. 29. Menzel scored 11 points on nine attacks and two aces. Castello was credited with 16 receptions, 50 percent positive.

Shoji, Touzinsky and the Berlin Recycling Volleys fell to evivo Düren, which includes U.S. setter Evan Barry (San Diego) and outside hitter AJ Nally (Brighton, N.Y.), 25-21, 17-25, 31-29, 25-22 on Oct. 27.
Touzinsky played as a substitute and started the third set, scoring two points on two kills. Shoji scored one point with a block.
Barry scored one point with a block. Nally scored 12 points on 11 kills and one block.
Smith scored 11 points and Jablonsky added eight as Tours defeated Ajaccio, 25-20, 23-25, 28-26, 26-24 on Oct. 27. Smith scored on eight kills and two blocks while Jablonsky had eight kills.
Middle blocker Futi Tavana (Kalaheo, Hawaii) scored seven points on five kills and two blocks as his team Toulouse defeated Lyon, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-11 on Oct. 26.
Opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) and St-Nazaire fell to Paris, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 on Oct. 26. Troy led his team with 20 points on 14 kills, three blocks and three aces. Troy is third in the league in scoring with 116 points (5.65 points per set). He is also third in aces with nine (3.9 per set).
The Russian Super League regular season got started on Oct. 26 as Anderson and Zenit Kazan defeated Tyumen, 25-19, 25-22, 25-15. Anderson finished with 12 points on 10 kills, one block and one ace.
U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati) and Dinamo Moscow defeated Kuzbass, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22 on Oct. 26. Holt scored nine points on seven kills, one block and one ace.
Middle blocker Jacek Ratajczak (Warsaw, Poland) scored 14 points on 10 kills, three blocks and one ace as VC Euphony Asse-Linnik defeated VBC Waremme, 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 15-11 on Oct. 27.
Outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) played as a substitute and scored three points as Asseco Resovia defeated Jastrzębski Węgiel, 30-28, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22 on Oct. 26.
