U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Weekly Update for May 21
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 21, 2013) - The current U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team Weekly update released on May 21 includes briefs on U.S. players.
FIRST-RED BLUE SCRIMMAGE RESULTS: The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team played its first Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage of the summer training block on May 17 at Santa Monica High School, which resulted in five competitive sets. Among the outside hitters, Cassidy Lichtman (Poway, Calif.) notched 18 kills and two aces for a match-high 20 points to go with six digs. Kim Hill (Portland, Ore.) tallied 13 points and Regan Hood (Carrollton, Texas) totaled 11 points, Kelsey Robinson (Bartlett, Ill.) registered nine points with a match-high 16 digs with a 61 positive reception percent while playing libero the first set and outside hitter the rest of the match. Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) was credited with 14 points at opposite, while Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) and Juliann Faucette (San Diego) added 10 points. Cursty Jackson (Los Angeles) led the middle blockers with 12 points, while Rachael Adams (Cincinnati) converted five of six attacks for kills to go with two aces. Stephanie Klefot (Louisville, Ky.) contributed eight digs and a match-best 73 positive reception percent from her libero position, while Tama Miyashiro (Kaneohe, Hawaii) registered eight digs to go with a 50 positive reception percent. Kayla Banwarth (Dubuque, Iowa) added six digs and a 65 positive reception percent. The team used four setters with Jenna Hagglund (West Bend, Ohio) providing a match-high 31 assists and Lauren Cook (Lincoln, Neb.) added 30 assists. Caitlyn Donahue (Overland Park, Kan.) chalked up 21 assists and Courtney Thompson (Kent, Wash.) followed with 20 assists.
TWO MORE RED-BLUE SCRIMMAGES IN MAY: The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team will hold its second and three May Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmages on May 24 at Windward High School in Los Angeles at 7 p.m. PT. The contest is open to the public with free admission. Irvine Valley College will host the third intrasquad scrimmage on May 31in Irvine, Calif. U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly plans to incorporate additional Red-Blue intra-squad scrimmages during the summer as a means to provide match-like competition for all athletes training and to build community relations with the Southern California area. The City of Anaheim serves as the official host city of the USA Men’s and Women’s National Teams.
U.S. WOMEN OPEN SUMMER TRAINING BLOCK: The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team is in its third week of the summer training block at the USA National Team Center located in Anaheim, Calif. U.S. Women's National Team outside hitters training this week are Kristin Hildebrand (Orem, Utah), Kim Hill (Portland, Ore.), Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.), Regan Hood (Carrollton, Texas), Alix Klineman (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Cassidy Lichtman (Poway, Calif.) The middle blockers corp includes Rachael Adams (Cincinnati, Ohio), Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.), Christa Harmotto (Hopewell Township, Pa.), Cursty Jackson (Los Angeles, Calif.), Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.), Lauren Paolini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Danielle Scott-Arruda (Baton Rouge, La.). The opposites in camp are Alaina Bergsma (Chandler, Ariz.), Juliann Faucette (San Diego), Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) and Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.). Setters are Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.), Jenna Hagglund (West Bend, Ohio), Carli Lloyd (Bonsall, Calif.) and Courtney Thompson (Kent, Wash.). Liberos in training are Kayla Banwarth (Dubuque, Iowa), Nicole Davis (Stockton, Calif.) and Tama Miyashiro (Kaneohe, Hawaii). Additional members of the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team will return to training later this month and throughout the summer. Further, several athletes who completed their collegiate eligibility will be in the gym at various times during the summer as part of a tryout process to earn a spot on the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, while a select group of college seniors-to-be will be in the gym on a short-term basis to help acclimate to the team for a possible return to the team following their college careers.
WIN A COACHING SESSION WITH U.S. WOMEN’S STAFF AND PLAYERS: The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, including head coach Karch Kiraly and several members of the squad, will hold a special instruction event at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim on Sept. 7 from 1-3 p.m. The clinic, open to girls ages 13-18, will randomly select 18 individuals to attend the coaching session through an online contest. USA VOLLEYBALL CUP BRINGS IN JAPAN TO FACE U.S WOMEN: The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team will renew a long-standing series with Japan this summer as the two teams take part in the inaugural USA Volleyball Cup with three matches scheduled for the Southern California market in July. The USA Volleyball Cup series opens July 10 in San Diego on the campus of UC San Diego, followed by a July 12 contest at the Walter Pyramid on the campus of Long Beach State University in Long Beach. The two teams conclude the series on July 13 at JSerra High School in San Juan Capistrano. All three matches have start times of 7 p.m. PT. “The USA Volleyball Cup is a fantastic event connecting our Women’s National Team with the Southern California community in which we’re based, and of course providing competition against one of the world’s great teams,” U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly said. “To inaugurate this Cup, it is an honor that Japan has accepted to compete and renew a storied rivalry of tours across the United States and in Japan.” General admission ticket prices are $20 for adults and $5 for youth ages 18-and-under for each match, online or at the door. Children 3-and-under will be admitted free.
