COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 4, 2013) – Long Beach State defeated Pepperdine, 3-2 in the final dual meet on Saturday to win its first AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Pepperdine (20-1) was the defending champion. However it ran into problems with its No. 1 pair. The
Waves had to compete without Kim Hill (Portland, Ore.). Hill’s usual partner, Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif.) played in the Championships with Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif.).

But Orozco suffered a concussion during Friday’s semifinals and Frederick and Orozco forfeited to Long Beach State’s No. 1 Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Tara Roenicke (Alto Loma, Calif.).

At No. 2, Pepperdine’s Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif.) defeated Long Beach State’s Delainey Aigner-Swesey (Wrightwood, Calif.) and Chelsea Cabrajac (Downey, Calif.), 16-21, 21-13, 15-9.

At No. 3, Pepperdine’s Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif.) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif.) defeated Long Beach State’s Libby Fontanilla (Corona, Calif.) and Bre Mackie (Redding, Calif.), 21-19, 21-18.

Long Beach State’s Janisa Johnson (Long Beach, Calif.) and Tyler Jackson (Long Beach, Calif.) won the contest at No. 5 over Pepperdine’s Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas), 21-19, 21-18.

With the schools tied at 2-2, the deciding point rested on the last match to start at No. 4, where the 49ers’ Lauren Minkel (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Jocelyn Neely (La Habra, Calif.) defeated Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif.), 9-21, 21-9, 15-10.

In Saturday’s semifinals, LBSU defeated the University of Southern California (3-2) while Pepperdine topped Florida State (3-2).

Following the final, the AVCA named 14 players to the 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball All-American list (see below). Pepperdine’s Nina Matthies was named the coach of the year.

Sixteen pairs will compete for the pairs team title at the AVCA National Championship on Sunday (May 5).
