Junior Beach Tour Begins with Desert Open

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 1, 2013) – The 2013 USA Volleyball Junior Beach Tour opened with hot temperatures and even hotter action at the Desert Open on April 28 in Glendale, Ariz.
Forty-one girls’ beach volleyball teams competed in four age divisions competed. The top three teams in each division earned bids for the Invitational Division at the National Championships on July 27-28 in Milwaukee, Wis.
The 14-and-under age group had the most teams with 20. Darian Clark and Gabby Leo, both from Phoenix, won the division with a 21-11, 19-21, 15-12 victory over Anna Morse (Tempe, Ariz.) and Jayelin Lombard (Laveen, Ariz.). Brooke Nuneviller (Chandler, Ariz.) and Lauren Weintraub (Chandler, Ariz.) finished third.
The 18U division included only two teams. Sisters McKenna and Madison Witt of Glendale defeated Reagan Chalmers (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) and Mckenna Schultz (Fountain Hills, Ariz.), 21-8, 21-6. The Witts will play for the University of Arizona sand volleyball program in the fall.
Ten teams competed in the 12U division, which was won by Tatum Shuckhart (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Sophie Park (Chandler, Ariz.). Jenna Bolena (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Mary Shroll (Tempe, Ariz.) placed second and Justice Craig (Tempe, Ariz.) and Makenna Fullford (Mesa, Ariz.) finished third.
Nine teams vied for top honors in the 16U division. Olivia Hallaran (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Khalia Lanier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) took gold. Hailey Harward (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Lilly Nelson (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished with silver and Claudia Lemieux (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and Natalie Braun (Phoenix, Ariz.) won the bronze.
Coming up next on the USAV Junior Beach Tour will be the Texas Springs Open (May 18 in Galveston, Texas), the Carolina Grand Slam (May 18-19 in Raleigh, N.C.), the Fort Wayne Hoosier Beach Classic (May 18-19 in Fort Wayne, Ind.) and the Skills Clinic in Omaha, Neb.
