Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), competing as USA-A, battled to defeat their U.S. compatriots, the USA-B team of Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) in the gold medal match, 19-21, 21-17, 17-15.
In the men’s bracket, the USA-A team of Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) also advanced to the finals, where it fell to Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros, 21-14, 21-17.
To make it to the finals, Keenan and Mayer had to survive a marathon match against the Canada-A team of Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton, 21-18, 16-21, 16-14.
In the women’s bracket, Fopma and Sweat had to win a three-set match over Mexico’s Bibi Candelas and Martha Revuelta, 19-21, 21-18, 15-6, to advance to the final against their U.S. teammates.
“It is never fun to play against a team of your own country,” Fopma said. “We feel glad about this early success in the season.”
“Both teams played really good and we had to battle with the rainy conditions and the wet balls,” Sweat said. “I feel very happy with the win.”
In the other women’s semifinals, Hochevar and Ross got past Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas of Canada-A, 22-24, 21-14, 16-14.
In the women’s quarterfinals, which were also played Sunday, Fopma and Sweat won by forfeit over Gina Flores and Martha Euceda of Honduras while Hochevar and Ross defeated the Dominican Republic-A team of Diana Peguero and Nairobi Agramonte, 21-14, 21-16.
