COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 30, 2013) – Three U.S. beach volleyball teams will compete on Easter Sunday at the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.
The two U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams of Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) along with Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) remained undefeated at the end of play on Saturday and advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinals. On the men’s side, the USA-A team of Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) has advanced to the semifinals.
The women’s USA-A team of Fopma and Sweat won Pool B on Saturday with victories over the Dominican Republic-A team of Diana Peguero and Nairobi Agramonte (21-15, 21-8 in 35 minutes) and Mexico’s Marta Revuelta and Bibiana Candela (14-21, 21-14, 15-12 in 50 minutes).
Fopma and Sweat will play Gina Flores and Martha Euceda of Honduras in Sunday’s quarterfinals.
The women’s USA-B team of Hochevar and Ross won Pool A with a 4-0 record after beating the Dominican Republic-C team of Magen Bolton and Pamela Jaime by forfeit and Guatemala’s María José Orellana and Lourdes Ramírez (21-18, 21-16 in 38 minutes) on Saturday.
Hochevar and Ross will face Peguero and Agramonte in Sunday’s quarterfinals.
In the men’s bracket, Keenan and Mayer opened the day by winning their second pool play match by forfeit over Julian Bissette and Joseph Clercent of St. Lucia. The advanced to the quarterfinals where they defeated the Puerto Rico-A team of Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock, 21-16, 21-12 in 30 minutes.
Keenan and Mayer will play the Canada-A team of Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton in Sunday’s semifinals. The Canada-B team of Christian Redman and Maceij Zbyszewski will play Mexico’s Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen in the other semifinal.
The USA-B team of Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) were eliminated from the competition on Saturday after losing to Schalk and Saxton in the quarterfinals, 21-18, 21-19 in 36 minutes. The U.S. team advanced from Pool D in second place with a 2-1 record after defeating the Puerto Rico-B team of Victor Rivera and Hector Soto in their final pool play match, 23-21, 21-18 in 43 minutes.
