COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 29, 2013) – Four U.S. beach volleyball teams combined for a record of 6-1 on Friday, the first day of the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.
The two U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams are undefeated after one day of play. The USA-A team of Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) defeated Deborah Constanzo and Karla Montilla of Dominican Republic-B, 21-2, 21-15, before prevailing, 21-19, 19-21, 15-8, over Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney of Canada-B.
The USA-B team of Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) began its day with a tough victory in three sets (23-25, 21-18, 15-13) over Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas of Canada-A and closed the action with a 21-8, 21-10 win over Honduras’ Gina Flores and Martha Euceda.
On the men’s side, Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) of USA-A had little trouble defeating the Dominican Republic-C team of Luis Rodriguez and Francisco Arredondo, 21-7, 21-3.
The USA-B men’s team of Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) suffered the only U.S. loss of the day, 21-13, 21-17 to Mexico’s Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros. However Drost and Montgomery came back to defeat Julian Bissette and Joseph Clercent of St. Lucia, 21-18, 21-12 in their second match.
The preliminary phase will continue on Saturday to complete pool play and play will conclude on Sunday with the quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches.
