COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 28, 2013) – Four U.S. beach volleyball teams are in the Dominican Republic this week for the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Boca Chica.
The U.S. will be represented on the women’s side by the USA-A team of Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) and the USA-B team of Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.).
Fopma and Sweat won the bronze medal one week ago at the NORCECA event in the Cayman Islands.
Ross won gold medals on the 2012 NORCECA Beach Circuit with Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) in Trinidad and with Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) in Aruba. She won a silver medal with Morgan Beck at the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Chula Vista, Calif.
U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams have won twice the gold medal in Boca Chica. In 2007, Paula Roca and Alizia Polzin triumphed in the inaugural female event while Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik topped the field in 2011.
On the men’s side, Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) will play their first NORCECA event as the USA-A team while Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) will play as USA-B.
As a team, Drost and Montgomery took the silver medal at the 2013 NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Aruba.
Montgomery also won gold medals at the event in Trinidad & Tobago with Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and in St. Lucia with Jon Mesko (Traverse City, Mich.). Montgomery won a silver medal at the 2012 event in Chula Vista, Calif., with Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii).
In the men’s field, Roberto Rodriguez of Puerto Rico will defend the title he won last year when teamed up with Orlando Irizarry. Mexico’s Juan Virgen, the 2010 winner with Aldo Miramontes, is another former champion competing in Boca Chica, this time with Lombardo Ontiveros as his partner.
