On the men’s side, the USA-A team of Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) took the silver while Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) took the women’s silver and Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) secured the bronze.
Rogers and Doherty won their semifinal match over Christian Redman and Maciej Zbyszewski of Canada-B, 21-19, 21-18 to advance to the final. There, the U.S. pair fell to Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriguez and Eric Haddock, the event’s defending champions, 21-16, 21-18.
“I am happy with the way we played in general,” Rogers said in a NORCECA press release. “It is our first tournament together and making it to the finals is pretty good. The competition was solid with teams like Canada, Mexico and, of course, Puerto Rico.
“I’d rather have liked to win and we were close to make it, one point here and there, but I am pleased.”
In the women’s tournament, the USA-A team of Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) won their semifinal against Mexico’s Bibi Candelas and Martha Revuelta, 21-16, 21-14.
However, Kropp and Pavlik fell in the final to Canada’s Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas, 21-15, 21-13.
Fopma and Sweat lost a hard-fought semifinal match against Broder and Valjas, 16-21, 27-25, 15-11. They came back to defeat Candelas and Revuelta, 21-13, 21-15.
Fopma and Sweat are scheduled to compete in the next NORCECA event on March 29-31 in the Dominican Republic along with the U.S. men’s team of Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).
