First-Ever Disney Volleyball Showcase Concludes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 24, 2013) – The Disney Volleyball Showcase concluded Sunday with five gold-medal matches at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. All five gold-medal matches were streamed live on ESPN3.

In the 18 Open Division, top-seed OVA 18 Asics of the Florida Region stopped second-seed Spiral 18 Black of the Arizona Region 25-23, 25-17 in the title match between undefeated teams. OVA 18 Asics won all nine matches of its matches, having been extended to three sets only in the final pool match against Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 18 Kevin of the Rocky Mountain Region. Tsunami 18-Val of the Southern Region bounced back from a semifinal loss to OVA 18 Asics with a 26-24, 25-18 victory over Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 18 Kevin in the bronze-medal match.

Fourth-seed Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 17 Jude of the Rocky Mountain Region won the 17 Open Division with a 25-19, 25-18 victory over top-seed OVA 17 Asics of the Florida Region in the gold-medal match. Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 17 Jude, which won its third tournament of the year including the Colorado Crossroads, gained a sense of revenge after falling to OVA 17 Asics 16-25, 25-20, 17-15 in the final pool match earlier on Sunday to finish Pool 1 with a 5-2 record. Spiral 17 Black of the Arizona Region bounced back from a semifinal loss to OVA 17 Asics with a 25-19, 25-22 victory over A5 Mizuno 17-1 of the Southern Region to claim the bronze medal.

Top-seed Michio Chicago 16 National of the Great Lakes Region blanked second-seed The Royal Tigers 16 Royal of the North Texas Region 25-23, 25-21 in the 16 Open Division gold-medal match. Top-seed Michio Chicago 16 National, which won Pool 1 with a 6-1 record and its only loss in the last preliminary match, blanked CVC 16 Black of the Ohio Valley Region in the semifinals to advance to the gold-medal match. The Royal Tigers 16 Royal, which won Pool 2 with a 7-0 record as the third seed, topped CVA Colorado 16 Nike Elite of the Rocky Mountain Region in the opposite semifinal to reach the title match. CVC 16 Black won the bronze-medal match 25-18, 25-16 over CVA Colorado 16 Nike Elite.

In the 15 Open Division, second-seed Arizona Storm 15 Thunder of the Arizona Region eased past top-seed Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 15 Shannon 25-16, 25-23 in the gold-medal match between undefeated teams. Arizona Storm 15 Thunder, 7-0 in pool play, reached the title match by sweeping Xtreme 15 Kaepa of the Lone Star Region in the semifinals. Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 15 Shannon, which went 7-0 in pool play, edged OP2 15 Smack of the Oklahoma Region in a tight three-set semifinal capped with a 22-20 score in the third set to advance. OP2 Smack won the bronze-medal match 25-22, 25-15 over Xtreme 15 Kaepa.

In the 14 Open Division, top-seed OVA 14 Asics of the Florida Region started the day’s gold-medal matches with a 25-23, 23-25, 15-11 victory over second-seed Borinquen Coqui 14-1 of Puerto Rico in a tilt between undefeated teams. OVA 14 Ascis defeated Northern California’s Encore Nay 14-1 in the semifinals, while Borinquen Coqui 14-1F topped Southern Region’s A5 Mizuno 14-1 on the opposite side of the bracket. Encore Navy 14-1 of the Northern California Region collected the bronze medal with a 25-13, 24-26, 15-10 victory over A5 Mizuno 14-1 in the bronze-medal match.

Unless already qualified, the top two teams from each age division will earn a bid to the 2013 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) open division for the same age division. Each division’s gold-medal team will be awarded free entry into the 2013 GJNC, paid by Disney.
