Three US Beach Teams Reach Cayman Semis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 23, 2013) – Three U.S. beach volleyball teams have advanced to Sunday’s semifinals of the NORCECA Beach Circuit tournament in Grand Cayman on the Cayman Islands after winning two matches each on Saturday.
On the men’s side, the USA-A team of Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) will play Christian Redman and Maciej Zbyszewski of Canada-B to open play on Sunday. In the other semifinal, defending champions Roberto Rodriguez and Eric Haddock of Puerto Rico will face Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton of Canada-A.
For the women, the USA-A team of Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) will play Mexico’s Bibi Candelas and Martha Revuelta. In the other semifinal, the USA-B team of Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) will face the Canada-A team of Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas.
Rogers and Doherty opened play Saturday by winning their final pool play match, 21-11, 21-18 in 35 minutes over Carlos Talavera and David Vargas of El Salvador. Their quarterfinal match was a battle to defeat Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros, 13-21, 24-22, 15-10 in 1 hour.
Pavlik and Kropp won their final pool play match, 21-9. 21-11 in 27 minutes over Samantha Mann and Jamilla Lansiquot of St. Lucia. They won their quarterfinal match, 24-22, 21-19 in 43 minutes over the Mexico-B team of Vanessa Virgen and Diana Estrada.
Fopma and Sweat won their final pool play match, 21-7, 21-5 in 40 minutes over Gina Flores and Martha Euceda of Honduras. In the quarterfinals, they defeated 21-14, 21-12 in 35 minutes against María Orellana and Lourdes Ramírez of Guatemala.
Finally, the U.S. men’s team of Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) were eliminated from the tournament with a quarterfinal loss to Redman and Zbyszewski, 21-19, 26-24 in 35 minutes.
The medal matches will be played after the semifinals on Sunday.
