Disney Volleyball Showcase Moves to Final Day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 23, 2013) – The Disney Volleyball Showcase moves into its final day on Sunday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., with three of its five division gold-medal matches set. All five gold-medal matches will air live on ESPN3.

In the 18 Open Division, top-seed OVA 18 Asics of the Florida Region and fourth-seed Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 18 Kevin of the Rocky Mountain will meet each other on Sunday morning in the final Pool 1 match with 6-0 records and assured spots in the semifinal round. Likewise in Pool 2, second-seed Tsunami 18-Val of the Southern Region and third-seed Spiral 18 Black of the Arizona Region have earned spots in the semifinals on Sunday after meeting each other to conclude pool play.

Fourth-seed OVA 17 Asics of the Florida Region leads the 17 Open Pool 1 with a 6-0 record, while top-seed Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 17 Jude of the Rocky Mountain Region are 6-1. Both teams will meet in the final pool match on Sunday morning. In Pool 2 of the 17 Open Division, third-seed A5 Mizuno 17-1 of the Southern Division is 6-0, while second-seed Spiral 17 Black of the Arizona Region is 5-1. Both teams meet on Sunday to conclude pool play.

Michio Chicago 16 National of the Great Lakes Region and The Royal Tigers 16 Royal of the North Texas Region will face-off for the 16 Open Division title on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET. Top-seed Michio Chicago 16 National, which won Pool 1 with a 6-1 record and its only loss in the last preliminary match, blanked CVC 16 Black of the Ohio Valley Region in the semifinals to advance to the gold-medal match. The Royal Tigers 16 Royal, which won Pool 2 with a 7-0 record as the third seed, topped CVA Colorado 16 Nike Elite of the Rocky Mountain Region in the opposite semifinal to reach the title match.

Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 15 Shannon from the Rocky Mountain Region will face Arizona Storm 15 Thunder of the Arizona Region in the 15 Open title match on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET. Top-seed Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 15 Shannon, which went 7-0 in pool play, edged OP2 15 Smack of the Oklahoma Region in a tight three-set semifinal capped with a 22-20 score in the third set to advance. Second-seed Arizona Storm 15 Thunder, also 7-0 in pool play, reached the title match by sweeping Xtreme 15 Kaepa of the Lone Star Region in the semifinals.

In the 14 Open Division, top-seed OVA 14 Asics of the Florida Region will face second-seed Puerto Rico’s Borinquen Coqui 14-1F in the title match at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday. Both finalists won their pools with 7-0 records. OVA 14 Ascis defeated Northern California’s Encore Nay 14-1 in the semifinals, while Borinquen Coqui 14-1F topped Southern Region’s A5 Mizuno 14-1 on the opposite side of the bracket.

Unless already qualified, the top two teams from each age division will earn a bid to the 2013 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) open division for the same age division. Each division’s gold-medal team will be awarded free entry into the 2013 GJNC, paid by Disney.

All five Disney Volleyball Showcase gold-medal matches on March 24 will be video streamed live on ESPN3. The gold-medal match schedule has 14 Open at 8 a.m. ET, 15 Open at 9:30 a.m. ET, 16 Open at 11 a.m. ET, 17 Open at 12:30 p.m. ET and 18 Open at 2 p.m. ET.
