First Day of Disney Volleyball Showcase in the Books

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 22, 2013) – Several teams concluded the first day of the Disney Volleyball Showcase with undefeated pool records Friday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

In the 18 Open Division Pool 1, OVA 18 Asics of the Florida Region and Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 18 Kevin of the Rocky Mountain Region are co-leaders with 3-0 records on the first day of pool play. In Pool 2, both Tsunami 18-Val of the Southern Region and Spiral 18 Black of the Arizona Region are 3-0 to start the competition.

Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 17 Jude from the Rocky Mountain Region and OVA 17 Asics of the Florida Region went 3-0 in Pool 1 of the 17 Open Division on the opening day. In Pool 2, A5 17-1 of the Southern Region held a 3-0 record, while Woodlands Wave 17UA of the Lone Star Region was 2-0 with its last match of the day unreported.

In Pool 1 of the 16 Open Division, Michio Chicago 16 National of the Great Lakes Region is the lone undefeated team at 4-0 following the first day of competition. Woodlands Wave 16UA of the Lone Star Region and CVA Colorado 16 Nike Elite are 3-1 and in second place.

On the opposite of the 16 Open Division, The Royal Tigers 16 Royal of the North Texas Region leads Pool 2 with a perfect 4-0 record. Mizuno Long Beach 16 Rockstar of the Southern California Region and OVA 16 Asics of the Florida Region are 3-1.

Colorado Juniors/Kaepa 15 Shannon of the Rocky Mountain Region posted a 3-0 record to start the first day of the 15 Open Pool 1. Four teams are all 2-1 in the round-robin pool bracket. In Pool 2, AZ Storm 15 Thunder of the Arizona Region and OP2 15 Smack of the Oklahoma Region are both 3-0 to lead the eight-team pool.

In the 14 Open Division, Pool 1 leaders through the first day are OVA 14 Asics of the Florida Region and A5 Mizuno 14-1 of the Southern Region with 4-0 records. In Pool 2 of the 14 Open Division, Puerto Rico’s Borinquen Coqui 14-1F leads the pack with a 4-0 record, while Gainesville Nike 14 of the Florida Region and Encore Navy 14-1 of Northern California are just behind at 3-1.

The top two teams from each age division will earn a bid to the 2013 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) open division for the same age division. Each division’s gold-medal team will be awarded free entry into the 2013 GJNC, paid by Disney.

All five Disney Volleyball Showcase gold-medal matches on March 24 will be video streamed live on ESPN3. The gold-medal match schedule has 14 Open at 8 a.m. ET, 15 Open at 9:30 a.m. ET, 16 Open at 11 a.m. ET, 17 Open at 12:30 p.m. ET and 18 Open at 2 p.m. ET.
