COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 21, 2013) – The USA Volleyball Badger Region held sitting volleyball clinics and competitions the weekend of March 15-17 at Milwaukee’s Delta Center in conjunction with the Badger Region Championship.

Dan Regan (St. Louis, Mo.) of the U.S. Men’s Sitting Volleyball attended along with Elliot Blake, USA Volleyball coordinator of sitting volleyball teams. A grant from Proctor & Gamble helped pay for the event.

On Friday night, about 50 people attended a coaches’ clinic that introduced sitting volleyball as a cross-training tool. Then they got to play on the court. Members of the West Allis Lightning 15U Boys club team practiced prior to the clinic and served as demonstrators. Parents, players and coaches all took to the court to play.

On Saturday, players and coaches from the West Allis Lightning Boys 18U club team played had a practice session with Regan before donning jerseys and playing a best-of-three exhibition match.

“After the match, a group of girls called dibs on the winner and played a game to 25,” said Deb Stadick, program director for the Badger Region. “Another group wanted to play after, so they scrimmaged against the Lightning boys as well. We couldn’t get them off the court.”

A second best-of-three exhibition match featured Northshore Milwaukee Volleyball Club's 18U Boys players against a group of Northshore coaches.

Sunday was open gym and Regan ran a practice session with whoever wanted to play.

“We started at 10:45 and it was 1: 15 before I finally had to kick people off the court so we could feed him lunch,” Stadick said. “Kids were on the court playing sitting the rest of the day.”

MILLER TAKES ANOTHER SILVER

Kari Miller (Washington, D.C.), a two time Paralympic silver medalist with the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team, took another silver medal on March 19 when she participated in the Congressional Olympic & Paralympic Caucus Free Throw Challenge, hosted by the United States Olympic Committee and the Congressional Olympic & Paralympic Caucus.

The second edition of the event took place at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C., and  brought together members of Congress and a handful of Team USA’s best athletes to demonstrate basketball skills in promotion of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

Miller was teamed with U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman (Calif.) and tied for second place in the competition with Kara Lawson, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist in basketball, who paired with U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley (N.Y.). Both teams finished with 18 points.

Lawson also took the gold medal in the event as she paired with U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (Ill.) to finish with 38 points.

LIBERTY MUTUAL EMPLOYEES TAKE A SEAT

USA Volleyball sponsor partner Liberty Mutual Insurance and its Responsible Sports program held a unique Olympic experience for its employees at the U.S. Olympic Training Center on March 15 in Colorado Springs, Colo. As part of the experience, they participated in various Olympic and Paralympic sports, including sitting volleyball. They played with and against several USA Volleyball staff members who were able to interact with a key USA Volleyball partner.

USA Volleyball provided the Responsible Sports program staff a tutorial on sitting volleyball through video, demonstrations and active participation.

Below are some comments from the Responsible Sports program staff regarding their time learning to play sitting volleyball.

Alycen McAuley, Managing Director, Responsible Sports
“The men and women who compete for Team USA in the Paralympic Games are such a source of inspiration for so many of us.  But when you actually have the chance to try to play the game of sitting volleyball yourself, you appreciate even more their tremendous athletic talent and medal-winning accomplishments.”
