COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 14, 2013) – The Pepperdine sand volleyball team scored victories over Florida State and Nebraska on the first day of the USA Volleyball Beach Collegiate Challenge on Thursday in Chula Vista, Calif.

The tournament is being played on the sand volleyball courts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

In the top dual meet of the day between Pepperdine, ranked No. 1 by the AVCA, and No. 4 Florida State, FSU took the first two matches at Nos. 4 and 5 before Pepperdine won at Nos. 1 and 3.

In the match between the No. 2 teams, Pepperdine’s Lara Dykstra and Caitlin Racich rallied from a second-set deficit to force a third set against Florida State’s Aurora Davis and Fatma Yildram. Dykstra and Racich won the match, 15-21, 21-14, 16-14 to give Pepperdine the 3-2 team victory.

Both Dykstra and Racich are part of USA Volleyball’s Beach High Performance Program.

“I am so impressed with the level of play out here. It's much higher across the board than what we saw last year,” said Ali Wood Lamberson, USA Volleyball’s director of beach programs. “Getting to the National Championships in May is going to be a real dogfight."

Pepperdine also defeated the University of Nebraska, 5-0.

Nebraska is making its sand volleyball debut at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge and had one victory on the day. The Cornhuskers’ No. 1 team of Kelsey Robinson and Alexa Strange defeated Florida State’s No. 1 team of Fatma Yildirim and Aurora Davis, 19-21, 21-19, 15-7.

Robinson, Strange and Davis are all part of the USAV’s Beach High Performance Program.
