Youth Volleyball Update: Girls’ Junior Season Kicks into High Gear at Crossroads

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 1, 2013) – USA Volleyball’s junior club volleyball season for girls kicks into high gear this weekend with the first of 10 national qualifiers having its first serve.
The Colorado Crossroads opens its first weekend of competition March 2-4 with the 16s to 18s age groups converging at the Denver Convention Center. The Colorado Crossroads concludes March 8-10 with the 12s to 15s age groups. For additional information on Colorado Crossroads, visit the tournament’s web site at coloradocrossroads.org.
Child in Hand will again exhibit at Colorado Crossroads this year. In 2012, participants of Crossroads generously raised over $2,000, which helped Child in Hand to do important medical and environmental assessments of six orphanages in Haiti that April. Past U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team member Tracy Stalls and others will be on hand representing Child in Hand to engage attendees with their new projects in Haiti. Child in Hand will also be accepting new or slightly used court shoes, kneepads, backpacks, etc., in an effort to share the volleyball love beyond the Rockies and back to Haiti.
The USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Qualifiers are one possible entry point into this year’s USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships, which is expanding to nearly 1,200 teams for the event to be held June 28 to July 5 at the Dallas Convention Center. The Southern California Qualifier begins March 8-10 with the 15s to 18s age groups competing in Las Vegas, Nev., while the three youngest age groups will compete April 19-21 in Anaheim, Calif.
Other upcoming qualifiers in March include the Mid-East Qualifier with 12s to 14s plus 15 American competing March 15-17 in St. Louis, followed by the 16s to 18s plus 15 Open and 15 USA divisions competing March 22-24 in Indianapolis. The Pacific Northwest Qualifier will have 12s to 14s, 16 USA and 16 American playing March 22-24 in Spokane, followed by the 15s, 16 Open, 17s to 18s playing March 29-31. The Big South Qualifier, the only qualifier playing in one weekend under the same roof, is set for March 29-31 at Atlanta. The NorthEast National Qualifier will be played March 29-31 with 12s to 14s playing at the Gaylord Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., the 15s at the Baltimore Convention Center and the 16s to 18s at the Philadelphia Convention Center.
The Lone Star Classic in Dallas, the Show Me Qualifier in Kansas City, Mizuno Northern Lights in Minneapolis and the Far Western in Reno, Nev., will all take place in April. For additional information on the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Qualifiers, click here.
USA Volleyball Boys’ Bid Tournament Results
While the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Qualifiers are just starting, eight of the nine USA Volleyball Boys’ Bid Tournaments have concluded with teams earning bids into the open division of the USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships set for June 27 to July 4 at Reno, Nev. The boys’ bid tournament is the Boys’ East Coast held May 25-27 at Richmond, Va.

USA Volleyball High Performance Tryouts
The USA Volleyball Indoor High Performance tryouts season is well under way for girls with four of the 33 tryouts already completed in Omaha, San Mateo, Calif., Beaverton, Ore., and Anaheim, Calif. The tryout held at the American Sports Centers Feb. 24 in Anaheim attracted a record 167 participants.
Upcoming girls’ tryouts include March 1 at the Denver Convention Center, March 2 at Honolulu, March 5 at Hilo, Hawaii, March 7 at the Denver and Las Vegas, and March 8 at Raleigh, N.C., and in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. For the full girls’ tryout schedule and how to register, click here.
USA Volleyball’s tryouts for boys’ indoor High Performance is winding down with only three of 18 tryouts remaining. On March 3, USA Volleyball will conduct boys’ tryouts at both Honolulu and Hilo, Hawaii. The last scheduled tryout is March 8 at Raleigh, N.C. FIVB Youth and Junior World Rankings Released
The FIVB released its Junior and Youth World Rankings and the U.S. Women’s Junior/Youth program ranks fifth overall and the U.S. Men’s Junior/Youth program ranks sixth overall. The ranking is based on the results of the FIVB Youth and Junior World Championships held in 2011 and the respective continental youth and junior championships per gender.
On the women’s junior and youth side, China is ranked first followed by second-place Brazil, third-place Italy and fourth-place Turkey. Dominican Republic, ranked eighth, is the second highest ranked team from NORCECA. For the full ranking, click here.
On the men’s junior and youth side, Serbia is ranked atop the list, followed by Argentina in second place, Spain in third place, Brazil in fourth place and Russia in fifth place. Cuba, ranked eighth in the world ranking, is the second-highest team from NORCECA. For the full ranking, click here.
USA Volleyball has qualified all four of its High Performance pipeline teams into their respective FIVB Volleyball World Championship in 2013. The U.S. Women’s Junior National Volleyball Team will compete at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship June 21-30 at Brno, Czech Republic. The U.S. Boys’ Youth National Volleyball Team will participate in the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship June 27 to July 7 at Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico. The U.S. Girls’ Youth National Volleyball Team will compete in the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ Youth World Championship held July 26 to Aug. 4 at Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
