Eight players on the team were part of the 2012 MJNT that won the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship in Colorado Springs. The returning players on the roster are setters Micah Christenson (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Matt West (Seattle, Wash.), opposite Ben Patch (Provo, Utah), middle blockers Driss Guessous (Pasadena, Calif.) and Nick Olson (New Berlin, Wis.), outside hitters Michael Henchy (Ventura, Calif.) and D.J. Newcomers include middle blocker Taylor Gregory (Saugus, Calif.) and outside hitters Tom Jaeschke (Wheaton, Ill.), Kyle Russell (Loomis, Calif.) and Aaron Russell (Ellicott City, Md.).
Setter James Shaw (Woodside, Calif.) and outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill.), both members of the 2012 MJNT, have been named as alternates to the 2013 squad along with middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago) and libero Brennan Anderson (Newport Beach, Calif.).
At the helm of the MJNT is head coach Pete Hanson, who is the head coach of the men’s volleyball team at Ohio State University. Jay Hosack, an assistant coach for the men’s volleyball team at Penn State University, and Jonah Carson, an assistant coach for the men’s volleyball team at the University of the Pacific, are assistant coaches.
The final 12-player roster was selected from an original field of 22 after a final tryout period in Southern California from June 16-20.
The MJNT will compete in the U21 Pan American Cup on July 12-20 in Costa Rica. In August, the team will reconvene at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to train for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship held in Ankara and Izmir, Turkey from Aug. 22-Sept. 1.
