COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 23, 2013) – The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team held its fourth Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage of the season on Friday at Cathedral Catholic High School in preparation for the upcoming USA Volleyball Cup series in hosting No. 3 Japan.
U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly utilized 21 players during the scrimmage with all playing at least 21 sets, often switching back-and-forth into the red and blue uniform tops over the course of the four-set scrimmage.
Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) scored a scrimmage-high 16 points with 13 kills on 28 attacks and three blocks in four sets. Cursty Jackson (Los Angeles) added 14 points via 10 kills on 23 attacks, two blocks and two aces. Sonja Newcombe (Lake Arrowhead, Calif.), in her first Red-Blue scrimmage of 2013, chipped in 12 points with six kills, four blocks and two aces. Kim Hill (Portland, Ore.) charted 11 points with 10 kills on 23 attacks and an ace in three sets. Juliann Faucette (San Diego), playing in her hometown, recorded 10 kills on 22 attacks in just two sets of action. Alaina Bergsma (Chandler, Ariz.) notched nine points with seven kills, one ace and one block in two sets, while Alix Klineman (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) matched that total with seven kills and two aces in three sets.
The U.S., which returned from Peru on June 16 with the Pan American Cup title for the second consecutive year, is now focused on Japan in the inaugural USA Volleyball Cup. Team USA returns to San Diego to host Japan on July 10 at UC San Diego, followed by a July 12 match at Long Beach State University and a July 13 contest at JSerra High School in San Juan Capistrano. All three matches will start at 7 p.m. PT.
