COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 20, 2013) – The temperature was hot and the competition was fierce as USA Volleyball’s Junior Beach Tour hit Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on June 15 for the Florida Grand Slam.
Sixty-nine teams participated, and the teams that finished first-through-fifth in each division qualified for the Invitational Division at the National Championships on July 27-28 in Milwaukee, Wis.
In the girls’ 12-and-under division, the team of Nieya Pelski and Katlynn Costello took the top spot, while Zoe Primack and Alexandra Goldman finished second. Julia Nelson and Avery Reiser earned third over Brooke Lohuis and Julie Piedra, who took fourth. Fifth place was a tie between Briana Riahifar and Amanda Silvestri, Samantha Beauparlant and Elise Lorens, Paige Kleidermacher and Michelle Marti, and Skylar Short and Brielle Jones.
The girls’ 14U division was won by Laura Stevenson and Brook Bauer. The duo of Macie Evans and Kirsten Klos took second place, Savana Pettit and Sienna Ciudad-Real grabbed third, and Taylor and Megan Keating finished fourth. Tied for fifth place were the teams of Lara Finan and Mazarine Tsuji, Rebecca Lopez and Valeria Castro-Delgado, Kaila Dorish and Bridget DeLorme, and Caroline Jenkins and Bailey Myott.
The largest division with 24 teams, girls’ 16U saw the pair of Hannah Tannone and Sullivan Maney claim first place. Daisia Grafton and Allie Pazos nabbed second, Allison Weeks and Madison Bell earned third, and Kealey Wik and Kaitlyn Smith finished fourth. Tied for fifth were the duos of Sara Duque and Rebecca Martinez, Kylie Roland and Taylor Ashcraft, Melissa Gregorchik and Emily Gell, and Amber Davis and Samantha DaDamo.
In the girls’ 18U division, Nikki Lyons and Mac Kennedy took first place over Cara Guthrie and Molly Webb, who finished second. Haley Mitchell and Shelby Barnett won third place, while Kara Mason and Brooke McDermott earned fourth. Fifth place was a tie between Cristina Finan and Sydney Kelleher, Katherine Decker and Gabby Bailey, Savannah Logan and Jessica Armstrong, and Bethany and Emily Taylor.
On the boys’ side, four teams qualified for the National Championships: Luis Lourido and Carlos Jimenez in the 14U division; Matt Costello and Bryce Barnett in the 16U division; and in the 18U division, the teams of Jessica Blakley and Daniel Shepherd and Tevone Hall and Robert Bruns.
Five USAV Junior Beach Tour events scheduled for this upcoming weekend include the Santa Monica Open (June 22 in Santa Monica, Calif.), theHeart of America Open (June 22-23 in Kansas City, Mo.), the Lone Star Beach Classic (June 22-23 in Austin, Texas), the Central Open 2 (June 23 in Milwaukee, Wis.) and the Great Lakes Open (June 23 in Rochester, N.Y.).
