Top U.S. Beach Volleyball Teams Roam to Rome

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 18, 2013) – Two U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams qualified for the FIVB Rome Grand Slam on Tuesday in Italy.
The U.S. teams of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) along with Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) will both begin pool play in the main draw on Wednesday.
Fopma and Sweat, seeded No. 3 in qualifying, defeated Switzerland’s No. 14 Tanja Goricanec and Tanja Hüberli, 21-11, 21-13 in 27 minutes. Day and Pavlik, seeded No. 10 in qualifying, beat Poland’s No. 7 Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek, 21-17, 21-18 in 35 minutes.
The U.S. men’s beach volleyball team of Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and John Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), seeded No. 11 in qualifying, fell in the first round to No. 22 Petr Benes and Premsyl Kubala of Czech Republic (15-21, 21-14, 15-10 in 46 minutes).
In women’s main draw, pool play the U.S. women’s team of April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) is seeded No. 7 and will open play on Wednesday against Canada’s No. 26 Jamie Lynn Broder and Kristina Valjas and then Finland’s No. 23 Emilia and Erika Nystrom. They will conclude pool play on Thursday against Spain’s No. 10 Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan.
No. 19 seeded Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) will open pool play against Czech Republic’s No. 14 Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova before playing No. 3 Madelein Meppelink and Sophie van Gestel of Netherlands. On Thursday, they will complete pool play against Canada’s No. 30 Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley.
Fopma and Sweat are seeded No. 24 in the main draw and will open play against Brazil’s No. 9 Maria Clara Salgado Rufino and Carolina Solberg Salgado before playing Italy’s No. 8 Gioria Daniela and Laura Giombini. Fopma and Sweat will finish pool play on Thursday against Germany’s No. 25 Jana Köhler and Anni Schumacher.
Day and Pavlik are seeded No. 28 in the main draw and will begin pool play on Thursday against Brazil’s No. 5 Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Taiana Lima and then Netherlands’ No. 12 Sanne Keizer and Marleen Van Iersel. On Thursday, Day and Pavlik will conclude pool play against Switzerland’s No. 21 Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré.
In the men’s bracket, Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) are seeded No. 3 in the main draw and will start against Spain’s No. 30 Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira on Wednesday. On Thursday, they will play Australia’s No. 19 Isaac Kapa and Christopher McHugh. On Friday, the U.S. pair will conclude pool play against Netherlands’ No. 14 Alexander Brouwer 2 Robert Meeuwsen.
Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 4 in the main draw, will play Spain’s No. 29 Francisco Alfredo Marco and Christian García on Wednesday. On Thursday, they will face Netherlands’ No. 20 Daan Spijkers and Christiaan Varenhorst. On Friday, the U.S. team will complete pool play against Germany’s No. 13 Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif.
The U.S. team of Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.), seeded No. 18, will begin pool play on Wednesday against Kazakhstan’s No. 15 Alexey Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko. On Thursday, they will play Brazil’s No. 2 Pedro Solberg Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt. The U.S. team will conclude pool play on Friday against Italy’s No. 31 Matteo Cecchini and Federico Morichelli.
