COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 14, 2013) – Not even a day of rain could deter 30 beach volleyball teams from playing at the 2013 USA Volleyball Junior Beach Tour’s Great Plains Open on June 8 in Omaha, Neb.

The tournament boasted nine more teams than last year, Tournament Director Bill Hamilton said.

Play was stopped due to heavy rain for more than an hour in the morning, but scattered showers through the rest of the day meant that play could continue.

14U medalists: from left, Jasmine Schmidt/Ashlyn Power (2nd),
Abby Weideman/Haley Weideman (1st), and Autumn Wood/Claire
Mountjoy (3rd).

The top three teams in each division earned bids for the Invitational Division at the National Championships on July 27-28 in Milwaukee, Wis.

There were nine teams in the girls’ 12-and-under division. It was won by Jordan McCormick (Omaha, Neb.) and Emma Altman (Omaha, Neb.), while the team of Bree Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Anna Sinnott (Waterloo, Iowa) took second. Emily Clapp (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Olivia Heinen (Cedar Falls, Iowa) earned third place after defeating Emily Bay (Elkhorn, Neb.) and Kaitlin Neely (Omaha, Neb.).

The girls’ 14U division was comprised of twelve teams. The duo of Abby and Haley Weideman (both of Omaha, Neb.) took the top spot. Jasmine Schmidt (Walton, Neb.) and Ashlyn Power (Lincoln, Neb.) grabbed second place, and Autumn Wood (Omaha, Neb.) and Claire Mountjoy (Omaha, Neb.) placed third over Jade Henderson (Robins, Iowa) and Madison Slagle (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).

Seven teams made up the girls’ 16U division, which saw Megan Miller (Omaha, Neb.) and Jamie Wilson (Omaha, Neb.) take first place. The pair of McKenzie Haite (LaPorte, Ind.) and Alyssa Kvarta (Crown Point, Ind.) finished second, while Tania Telford (Adel, Iowa) and Savana Johnson (Ankeny, Iowa) nabbed third after defeating Rebekah Hayes (Bellevue, Neb.) and Jordyn Del Rosario (Bellevue, Neb.).

In the girls’ 18U division, Linda Carr (Floyd, Iowa) and Gabbi Kellogg (Charles City, Iowa) took the top spot as the only team.

Seven Junior Beach Tour events will take place the weekend of June 15-16.
