COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 14, 2013) – The men’s beach team of Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson is the only U.S. team that advanced on Friday to the third round of playoffs at the FIVB Transavia The Hague Grand Slam in The Hague, the Netherlands.
In round two of playoffs, Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Patterson (Las Vegas, Nev.), seeded No. 5, swept Brazil’s No. 9 seeded Ricardo Alex Costa Santos and Alvaro Morais Filho (21-16, 21-15 in 33 minutes ), to advance to the third round of playoffs set for Saturday. There, the pair matches up with Brazil’s No. 4 seeded Pedro Solberg Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt to vie for a spot in the semifinals also set for Sunday.
Gibb and Patterson have won medals in three straight FIVB beach events (gold at the Shanghai Grand Slam, silver at the Corrientes Grand Slam and the World Cup Final) and are looking to make it four at this event where they remain undefeated.
In the first round of the men’s single-elimination bracket, No. 3 seeded Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) stomped No. 26 seeded Philip Gabathuler and Jonas Weingart of Switzerland in the first set. But the Americans fell by two points in the second and third sets (8-12, 22-20, 17-15 in 52 minutes) to be eliminated from the event.
“They cleaned up their game really good,” Rosenthal about the Brazil’s Santos and Filho in a FIVB press release. “We are the better team, but with this wind you can never tell.”
In the women’s first round of single-elimination, Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), seeded No. 17, came up short in two sets against Netherlands’ No. 26 seeded JatineVan der Vlist and Marloes Wesselink (21-14, 22-20 in 36 minutes).
In the women’s second round, Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) were also eliminated by No. 7 seeds Agatha Bednarczuk and Maria Antonelli of Brazil in two sets (21-13, 21-17 in 34 minutes).
On Thursday, the team Jennifer Fopma (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) were eliminated with a 1-2 pool-play record while Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.), seeded No. 16, were also sent home after going 0-3 in pool play.
The Hague is hosting a FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam for the first time after Open events in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and the European Championships in 2012.
