COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 8, 2013) – Two U.S. beach volleyball teams finished the first day of pool play undefeated at the fourth leg of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit on Friday in Toluca, Mexico.
On the women’s side in Pool A, the United States A team of Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) did not drop a set in the first day of pool play defeating Mexico’s B team of Vanessa Virgen and Stephanie Burnside (21-12, 21-14) and later breezing by Nicaragua’s Elia Torrez and Swan Mendoza (21-8, 21-9).
For the men, Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) came back from a first-set loss to defeat Canada B’s team of Simon Fecteau-Boutin and Ryan DeBruyn in three sets (20-22, 21-19, 15-12). The team cleaned up play when they swept Costa Rica’s Esteban Escobar and Jonathan Guevara (21-12, 21-14).
The women’s USA B team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) fell to Mexico’s A team of Martha Revuelta and Bibiana Candelas in two sets (21-19, 21-14). They did grab a win against Costa Rica’s Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro for a 1-1 pool-play record.
The U.S. men’s B team of Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) and Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) also finished the day with a 1-1 record after a two-set loss (25-23, 21-18) to Grant O’Gorman and Samuel Pedlow of Canada’s A team. Slick and Jennings later cruised by Costa Rica’s Esteban Escobar and Jonathan Guevara (21-21, 21-14).
Pool play will continue on Saturday and the top two from each pool will advance to single elimination. The top four will compete in the semifinals and finals scheduled for Sunday.
