Jun 09 Three Beach Teams Reach Semifinals in Mexico

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 8, 2013) – Three U.S. beach volleyball teams have advanced to Sundays semifinals of the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Toluca, Mexico.

In the women’s bracket, the U.S. team of Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) will have to play compatriots Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) in Sunday’s semifinals. The other semifinal will see Mexico’s Marta Ravuelta and Bibiana Candelas take on their Mexico teammates, Vanessa Virgen and Stephanie Burnside.

On the men’s side, the U.S. team of Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) and Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) advanced to the semifinals, where it will play Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriguez and Hector Soto. In the other men’s semifinal, Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros will play Canada’s Grant O’Gorman and Samuel Pedlow.

On Saturday, Ross and Hughes completed pool play and won their pool with a 3-0 record by defeating El Salvador’s Diana Romero and Marcela Avalos (21-11, 21-8 in 25 minutes).  The U.S. pair went on the quarterfinals, where they beat Curacao’s Christine Anthony and Samira Lewis (21-10, 21-11 in 29 minutes).

Day and Pavlik went 1-1 in pool play on Friday and finished second in the pool Saturday after winning their final pool play match over Canada’s Alexandra Wooley and Sophie Bukovec (21-13, 21-9 in 28 minutes). In the quarterfinals, Day and Pavlik beat Mexico’s Olivia Meza and Zaira Orellana (21-13, 21-4 in 28 minutes).

Slick and Jennings also went 1-1 in pool play on Friday and finished second after winning their final pool match on Saturday (21-13, 21-11 in 38 minutes) over Aruba’s Mitchel Daniel and Earganell De Cuba. They advanced to the quarterfinals, where they defeated Cuba’s Karell Pina and Sergio Gonzalez (21-14, 21-17 in 41 minutes).

The U.S. men’s team of Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was eliminated on Saturday after losing in the quarterfinals to O’Gorman and Pedlow (21-17, 21-12 in 34 minutes).
