COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 8, 2013) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Tara Roenicke and Kirby Burnham advanced to the round of 16 at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships on Saturday in Myslowice, Poland, but was knocked in the second round.
Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Burnham (Newport Beach, Calif.), seeded third in the tournament, won their first round knockout match against 13th-seeded Maariafe Artacho and Jessyka Ngauamo of Australia, 21-19, 21-16. In the round of 16, Roenicke nearly rallied to victory before falling 21-16, 19-21, 15-13 to Germany’s Christine Aulenbrock and Cinja Tillmann, who were seeded No. 22.
In the men’s bracket, both U.S. teams were eliminated in the first round of the main draw. Alex Jones (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Santa Monica, Calif.), seeded No. 2, lost 21-13, 21-13 to the 11th-seeded Ruslan Bykanov and Yaroslav Ostrakhovskiy of Russia.
Devon Hatcher (Los Osos, Calif.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.), seeded 28th, fell 21-7, 21-8 to the Austrian duo of Christoph Dressler and Fabian Kandolf, who were seeded 23rd.
Both American men’s teams finished in a tie for 17th place.
