Three US Pairs Advance to U23 Beach Worlds First Round

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 7, 2013) – Three U.S. beach volleyball teams competing in the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships in Myslowice, Poland, broke pool on Friday and have advanced into the first round knockout stage.

Alex Jones (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Santa Monica, Calif.) won their first match of the day by forfeit over 18th-seeded Ruben Alejandro Mora Romero and Miguel Angel Lopez Lopez of Nicaragua. Jones and Stevenson, the second seed, dropped their second match to No. 15 seed Juan Revuelta and Ricardo Galindo of Mexico, 21-18, 21-19.

Jones and Stevenson finished Pool B with a 1-2 record and in third place. In the final phase of the main draw beginning on Saturday (June 8), they will face the 11th-seeded Russian tandem of Ruslan Bykanov and Yaroslav Ostrakhovskiy in the first round. Bykanov and Ostrakhovskiy finished pool play with a 2-1 record.

Devon Hatcher (Los Osos, Calif.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.), seeded 28th, started their day with a 22-20, 21-15 loss to Venezuela’s Vicente Salasar and Gerardo Mendez, who are seeded No. 12. However, Hatcher and Kalmbach bounced back in their final pool play match to defeat Canada’s No. 21 Greg Simone and Gabriel Burlacu, 21-12, 21-18.

With a 1-2 record, Hatcher and Kalmbach placed third in Pool E. They will face Christoph Dressler and Fabian Kandolf of Austria in the round of 24. Dressler and Kandolf, the 23rd seed, ended pool play with a 2-1 record. In the women’s bracket, the duo of Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Kirby Burnham (Newport Beach, Calif.) lost its match against 14th-seed Taylor Pischke and Melissa Humana Paredes of Canada, 21-14, 21-15.

Seeded third, Roenicke and Burnham finished Pool C in second place with a 1-1 record. They will challenge Australians Maariafe Artacho and Jessyka Ngauamo in the first round of knock outs. Seeded 13th, Artacho and Ngauamo completed Pool D with a 1-2 record.

The team of Meg Norton (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Brittany Tiegs (Stuart, Fla.) was the only U.S. pair not to advance out of pool play. Norton and Tiegs, seeded No. 23, lost their final pool play match to the No. 26 Latvian duo of Ilze Liepinlauska and Sandra Ragozina, 23-21, 13-21, 15-10. Norton and Tiegs finish the tournament with an 0-3 record in Pool G.
