Roenicke, Burnham Atop Pool at U23 World Championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 6, 2013) – After the first day of pool play at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships in Myslowice, Poland, the U.S. beach volleyball team of Tara Roenicke and Kirby Burnham sits at the top of the standings in Pool C.
Seeded No. 3, Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Burnham (Newport Beach, Calif.) were slated to have two matches, the first against the team seeded 30th. However, with only 29 teams, this slot remained empty. Therefore, Roenicke and Burnham’s first match of the day was a 21-5, 21-9 victory over against 19th-seeded of Cristina Monterrey and Catalina Zuniga of Costa Rica in 23 minutes.
On Friday, the duo will take on Taylor Pischke and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Canada, seeded No. 14. Pischke and Humana-Paredes defeated Monterrey and Zuniga 21-7, 21-8 in their first match.
Meg Norton (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Brittany Tiegs (Stuart, Fla.), the 23rd seed, dropped their first two matches in Pool G. The pair lost to No. 10 team of Paula Soria Gutierrez and Raquel Brun Forcadell of Spain 21-16, 25-23 to open the tournament. In their second match of the day, Norton and Tiegs lost 21-16, 21-14 to the seventh-seed Rimke Braakman and Jolien Sinnema of the Netherlands.
Norton and Tiegs challenge No. 26 Ilze Liepinlauska and Sandra Ragozina of Latvia in their final match of pool play on Friday. Liepinlauska and Ragozina are 1-1 in pool play, having defeated Soria and Brun, but lost to Braakman and Sinnema.
In the men’s bracket, No. 2 seed Alex Jones (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Santa Monica, Calif.) lost their first match in Pool B to No. 31 Lars Tveit Retterholt and Hendrik Nikolai Mol of Norway, 21-14, 21-16. Jones and Stevenson resume pool play on Friday with a match against 18th-seeded Ruben Alejandro Mora Romero and Miguel Angel Lopez Lopez of Nicaragua. Mora and Lopez lost their first match in pool play to the No. 15 Mexican team of Juan Revuelta and Ricardo Galindo, 18-21, 21-16, 15-10. Jones and Stevenson will then face Revuelta and Galindo to wrap up pool play.
Devon Hatcher (Los Osos, Calif.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.) advanced to the main draw due to an unexpected vacancy after having lost in the qualification round. Hatcher and Kalmbach, the No. 28 seed and competing in Pool E, were defeated by the No. 5 team of Maciej Kosiak and Maciej Rudol of Poland, 22-20, 21-17. On Friday, Hatcher and Kalmbach will take on Venezuela’s Vicente Salasar and Gerardo Mendez, who are seeded No. 12 and are 1-0 after defeating Canada’s Greg Simone and Gabriel Burlacu, 21-11, 21-10. Hatcher and Kalmbach then face Simone and Burlacu to cap pool play.
