Beach Teams in Poland for U23 Worlds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 4, 2013) – Four U.S. beach volleyball teams will begin play on Wednesday at the inaugural FIVB Under-23 World Championships  in Myslowice, Poland.

The teams of Devon Hatcher (Los Osos, Calif.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Alex Jones (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Santa Monica, Calif.) will compete in the men’s division. Meg Norton (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Brittany Tiegs (Stuart, Fla.) will play on the women’s side, as will Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Kirby Burnham (Newport Beach, Calif.).

Hatcher and Kalmbach, will begin competition on Wednesday (June 5) in the men’s qualification bracket, where they are the No. 1 seeded team. They have a first-round bye, and will play the winner of the match between Croatia’s No. 16 Mate Glaurdic and Niksa Dellorco and Norway’s No. 17 Lars Tveit Retterholt and Hendrik Nikolai Mol.

Norton and Tiegs must also play in the qualification bracket and are also the No. 1 seeded team. On Wednesday, they will play the winner of the first-round match between No. 8 Olena Basanova  and Valentyna Hrytsyuk of Ukraine and No. 9 Nadzeya Stoliar and Valeryia Babenka of Belarus.

Jones and Stevenson along with Roenicke and Burnham will open play on Thursday (June 6) in the main draw, which will open with pool play on Thursday and Friday.

The final phase of competition begins on June 8, with the rounds of 24 and 16 as well as quarterfinal matches. Semifinals and finals take place on June 9.

Devon “Hawk” Hatcher
Hometown: Los Osos, Calif.
Birth Year: 1991
Height: 6-1
Hatcher competed in the FIVB U19 World Championships in Myslowice in 2007 with partner Will Montgomery, where the duo finished tied for 19th. That year, as well as in 2008, he competed in five AVP tournaments with five different partners, finishing as high as 33rd. In 2012, he and partner Garrett Wilson placed third in the National Volleyball League Qualifier Tour Championship.

Parker Kalmbach
Hometown: Newport Beach, Calif.
Birth Year: 1992
Height: 6-7
College: Pepperdine
Kalmbach has competed in the FIVB Under-19 and Under-21 World Championships four times, finishing as high as ninth three times with different partners. He has also participated in the AVP Pro Beach Tour, the NORCECA beach circuit and the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series, and placed fifth in USA Volleyball’s International Development Qualifier in 2011.

Alex Jones
Hometown: Sunnyvale, Calif.
Birth Year: 1992
Height: 6-4
College: Cal State Northridge
Jones has partnered with Stevenson since 2012, when the duo competed in the FIVB Junior World Championships in Halifax, Canada, finishing tied for fifth place. Jones and Stevenson also finished 10th at the 2012 NORCECA beach volleyball tournament in Chula Vista, Calif..

Kyle Stevenson
Hometown: Santa Monica, Calif.
Birth Year: 1992
Height: 6-4
College: Cal State Northridge
Stevenson began playing beach volleyball internationally in 2009 at the FIVB U19 World Championship in Alanya, Turkey, where he and partner Kalmbach finished tied for 17th. He competed in several tournaments in 2011, finishing as high as 25th, before teaming up with Jones in 2012 and finishing fifth at the FIVB Junior World Championships.

Meg Norton
Hometown: Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Birth Year: 1991
Height: 5-11
College: UCLA
Norton competed in the AVP Pro Beach Tour in 2009 with partner Alyssa Anderson. In 2010 and 2011 she competed on UCLA’s indoor volleyball team before switching to sand volleyball for 2013. She competed at the 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Championships with partner Kelly Reeves as UCLA’s No. 1 team.

Brittany Tiegs
Hometown: Stuart, Fla.
Birth Year: 1991
Height: 5-9
College: University of Hawaii
Tiegs was an AVCA sand volleyball All-American at Florida State University in 2012 and placed third at the 2012 AVCA National Collegiate Sand Championships with Aurora Newgard. Tiegs and partner Tiffany Snow finished fifth at the 2010 AVP Young Guns Developmental Tour in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Tiegs played in the 2012 Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series, finishing as high as ninth.

Tara Roenicke
Hometown: Alta Loma, Calif.
Birth Year: 1991
Height: 5-10
College: Long Beach State
Roenicke won the 2010 FIVB Junior (U21) World Championships with Summer Ross. The next year she finished fifth at the event with Rebecca Strehlow. She finished fifth at the 2008 FIVB Youth (U19) World Championships with Caitlin Ledoux. Most recently, Roenicke finished second for a second straight year in the pairs competition at the 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships. She is a two-time AVCA sand volleyball All-American.

Kirby Burnham
Hometown: Newport Beach, Calif.
Birth Year: 1992
Height: 6-1
College: USC
Burnham and partner Stevi Robinson won the 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship. Burnham and Jace Pardon finished 17th at the 2012 SWATCH FIVB Junior (U21) World Championship in Halifax. In 2012, Burnham played at the NORCECA Beach Circuit events in Chula Vista, Calif., and Oranjestad, Aruba, finishing seventh both times with different partners.
