Attending Summer Camps – Yes or No?

Regular club season is over and we are all anxiously awaiting the end of the year tournaments and championships. What about summer camps? Are they worth attending? How do I pick which ones to go to? These are all questions many volleyball players have.

Summer camps are a great way to get extra touches on the ball, great coaching from different perspectives and levels, and help prepare you for the last few tournaments of the year. If your club season is finished, summer camps are a perfect option to stay in the gym. There are always things you could be doing to get better in order to make you more appealing to college coaches.

You do need to be careful about the cost of college camps and also your intention behind attending these camps. Many colleges encourage players to attend their camps to help them better evaluate you as a recruit for their program. This is only true when there is sincere in-depth communication between you and a college and there is an offer in the near future. You want to make sure you aren’t misreading a college coach’s intentions when they say they would love to see you play at their summer camp so they can better evaluate you. Don’t forget that these college camps are great money generators for their programs and not solely for recruiting players.

Since money is a key factor in these types of decisions, pick your summer camps and college camps carefully. With this in mind, take the time to sit down as a family and discuss what the benefits would be to attending a particular college camp or summer camp.
