Raining Medals at USAV High Performance Championships

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (July 27, 2013) – It was a drizzly day outside on Saturday, but that did not stop seven teams from shining inside the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center as they netted championship titles at the 2013 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The teams who took home gold medals were USA Junior A1 Red in Women’s International Junior, USA Select A1 Red in Boys’ International Youth, USA Youth Continental Red in Girls’ International Youth, Iowa Girls' Youth National Team Black in Girls’ National Youth, Team Florida HP in Girls’ National Select and Puerto Rico Select in Boys’ National Youth and USA Select Continental in Boys’ Regional Youth.

Women’s International Junior Division

The Women’s International Junior Division gold-medal match pitted USA Select A1 Red against USA Junior A1 Red in a battle for the title. Set one showed equal talent of both teams, but USA Select A1 Red broke away to take the first set 25-22. The second set took a different turn, as USA Junior A1 Red grabbed the second set 25-16. In the final two sets, USA Select A1 Red competed past 25 points, but struggled to finish as USA Junior A1 Red captured the third and fourth sets 28-26 and 27-25 and earned the Women’s International Junior champions.

USA Junior Select A1 Red, 7-1 in the tournament, defeated USA Youth A1 Red 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 in the semifinals, while USA Junior A1 Red made it to the gold-medal match of the Women’s International Junior Division by handling USA Junior A1 Blue (7-1) 25-16, 25-10, 25-20 in the semifinals.

Girls’ International Youth Division

It was a showdown between USA Youth A1 Blue and USA Youth Continental Red in the Girls’ International Youth championship match. USA Youth Continental Red made the match a quick one, sweeping USA Youth A1 Blue 25-20, 25-23, 25-9.

USA Youth Continental Red, 8-1 in the tournament, advanced to the title match by defeating Badger Girls’ International Youth 25-20, 17-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-7 in the semifinals, while USA Youth A1 Blue (8-0) defeated Puget Sound Youth 25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23 in the semifinals.

Boys’ International Youth Division

In the Boys’ International Youth Division championship match, USA Select A1 Red faced USA Youth A1 White. Both teams battled for control throughout the five-set thriller. In the deciding set, USA Youth A1 White led 14-10, but USA Select A1 Red would not let up as it went on a 7-1 run to win the set and earn the Boys’ International Youth Division title with a 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 17-15 victory.

USA Select A1 Red, 8-3 in the tournament, reached the Boys’ International Youth championship match by defeating Team Florida HP 25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 25-20 in the semifinals, while USA Youth A1 White earned its spot in the finals by winning its semifinal match versus Northern California Volleyball Association Youth Red 25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 15-25, 15-13.

Boys’ National Youth Division

It was a full house in the championship match faceoff between Puerto Rico Select and Ohio Valley Region HP. While both teams competed for the title, Puerto Rico Select proved too much to handle as it swept Ohio Valley HP 25-17, 25-16, 25-14.

To advance to the title match, Puerto Rico Select defeated Aloha Region Boys’ Youth National (25-19, 25-27, 25-19, 23-25, 15-9) in the semifinals, while Ohio Valley Region HP edged out USA Youth Continental White (25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20).

Girls’ National Youth Division

It was an even playing field throughout Girls’ National Youth Division match between Iowa Girls’ Youth National Black and USA Select Continental Red. Iowa Girls’ Youth National Black headed into the fourth set leading 2-1. While USA Select Continental Red put up a fight, Iowa Girls’ Youth National Black closed out the match 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 25-22 and were crowned the Girls National Youth Division Champions.

Iowa Girls’ Youth National Black, 9-0 in the tournament, made it to the championship after sweeping USA Youth Continental Blue 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 in the semifinals and Team Carolina HP 25-22, 25-22, 27-29, 23-25, 15-5 in the quarterfinals. USA Select Continental Red (6-3) earned its championship place after defeating Oklahoma Region Volleyball Association HP 25-18, 25-21, 35-33 in the semifinals and Moku O Keawe Region 25-15, 17-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-12 in the quarterfinals.

Boys’ Regional Youth Division

During the first championship match of the day, USA Select Continental White faced Badger Boys’ Region in a battle for the Boy’s Regional title.  The teams played neck-and-neck throughout the five-set match. In the final set, the teams were tied at 17 before USA Select Continental White fought hard to capture the protracted fifth set and the championship title 25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 19-25, 21-19.

USA Select Continental White, 7-0 in the tournament, earned its spot in the finals by placing first in its pool. Badger Boys’ Region (5-2), who dropped its only match to USA Select Continental in pool play, reached the championship match by placing second in the pool.

Girls’ National Select Division

Southern California Volleyball Association Select (SCVAS) matched up against the home state Team Florida HP in the Girls’ National Select championship match. Wild fans and competitive play made this match a memorable one especially for Team Florida HP as it netted the championships title defeating SCVAS 25-15, 25-13, 21-25, 25-23.

Team Florida HP, 8-0 in the tournament, finished ahead of Iowa Girls’ Select Black 25-8, 21-25, 25-11, 25-17 in the semifinals and Aloha Region Girls’ National Select 25-20, 25-16, 25-19 in the quarterfinals. SCVAS Select (8-1) made it to the gold-medal match of the Girls’ National Select division by defeating Puerto Rico Girls’ Select 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23 in the semifinals and Arizona Girls’ Select 24-26, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18 in the quarterfinals.
