COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 25, 2013) – Competition continued on Thursday at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Anapa Open, being held in Anapa, Russia from July 23-28, and saw the U.S. team of Heather Hughes and Kaitlin Sather Nielsen advance to the elimination round.

Hughes (Torrance, Calif.) and Nielsen (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) concluded pool play with a match against 22nd-seeded Karolina Rehackova and Michala Kvapilova of the Czech Republic. Seeded No. 27, Hughes and Nielsen earned a 21-16, 17-21, 15-8 victory to secure a spot in the second phase of the tournament. Finishing in second place in Pool F with a 2-1 record, they advance to the first elimination round where they will face 18th-seeded Cindy Treland and Janne Pedersen of Norway (1-2) on July 26. Should Hughes and Nielsen win, they would advance into round two to face Argentina’s fifth-seeded Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug (3-0) later that day.

Pool play began in the men’s bracket, and it was a rough start for the U.S. duo of Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and James Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.). Montgomery and Drost fell to the fourth-seeded team of Ian Mehamed and Julian Amado Azaad of Argentina in their first match, 21-15, 21-16. They dropped their second match to Germany’s No. 13 Finn Dittelbach and Eric Koreng, 21-14, 21-19. Currently in fourth place in Pool D, Montgomery and Drost will wrap up pool play on July 26 with a match against the No. 20 Swiss duo of Jonas and Gabriel Kissling (0-2).

The main draw tournament of each gender is made up of 32 teams. The first phase divides the teams into eight pools of four that compete in round robin play for two days. The top three finishers in each pool (24 teams total) advance to the second phase, which is single elimination format. Phase two begins in the women’s bracket on July 26 and in the men’s bracket on July 27. Women’s semifinals and finals will take place on July 27, while men’s play wraps up with semifinals and finals on July 28.
