2013 USAV High Performance Championships (Indoor)

The USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, now in its 15th year, will be held July 23-27 at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

USA Volleyball Senior Director Tom Pingel is one of many who are eager for the event to begin. Pingel explains why he favors this event so much.

“I always look forward to the energy and electricity in the venue when competition begins,” Pingel said. “Other than the Olympic Games and Pan American Games, it’s the only indoor competition in which USA Volleyball participates where male and female teams participate in the same city during the same timeframe. With proper management, it’s a fabulous atmosphere.”

The HPC Opening Ceremony kicks off the event on July 23 at 7:30 p.m. ET in the Grand Floridian Ballroom. The ceremony welcomes the HPC-record 111 teams including international teams from 20 USA Volleyball Regions around the country and international teams from Brazil, Chile, Peru, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Canada, Haiti and New Zealand.

This event has grown exponentially since the beginning and Pingel, among other USAV staff, is pleased to see more international teams competing each year.

“After years of hard work and constantly working to make it the best-possible event of its kind, I think the word is finally getting around internationally, that the USA Volleyball HP Championships is a great event that foreign teams should be involved in,” Pingel said.

Three-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas) will be the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony.

“Over the past 15 plus years, Stacy Sykora has been one of the most recognized and popular members of the Women’s National Team,” Pingel said. “Not only is she serving as the keynote speaker, but she is also serving as a member of the USAV HP coaching staff. Volleyball has been good to Stacy, but there is no doubt that Stacy has and will continue to be good to volleyball and its future stars.”

Other speakers include Florida Region CEO Steve Bishop and National Sports Convention Manager Fort Lauderdale CVB Carol Hudson, while Pingel will be the master of ceremonies.

The HPC includes 30 USAV High Performance teams, 61 Regional High Performance Teams representing 21 USA Volleyball Regions and 20 foreign teams. Teams will compete in one of seven divisions: Women’s International Junior, Boys’ International Youth, Girls’ International Youth, Girls’ National Youth, Girls’ National Select, Boys’ National and Boys’ Regional. The largest division, Girls’ National Select, is slated to host 25 teams.

Each team may consist of a maximum of 16 players, a head coach, two assistant coaches, an athletic trainer and a chaperone.

Live streaming of all matches played on courts 1-6 will be provided on the USAV HP Championships page beginning on July 23.

Typically, teams will play two matches per day during the early rounds. Each team is guaranteed six matches, though most will play between seven and 10 matches. The matches will be best-of-five sets, with the first four sets played to 25 points and the tiebreaker to 15 points. All championship matches are scheduled for July 27.

First through third place in each age division will receive awards. An All-Tournament team of eight players and an MVP will be selected in the three international divisions.

Admission is $10 for a daily pass and $40 for a tournament pass. Youth ages 12-and-under are admitted free.
