COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 12, 2013) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) advanced to Sunday's bronze medal final at the Gstaad Grand Slam in Gstaad, Switzerland, held from July 9-14.
Gibb and Patterson, seeded No. 6, played three matches on Saturday to advance. They handily defeated No. 5 Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego of Brazil, 21-16, 21-10, in their Round 2 elimination match. In Round 3, Gibb and Patterson earned a 21-15, 21-16 victory over Latvia’s No. 3 Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs to book a spot in the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Gibb and Patterson lost a 21-19, 21-18 battle to No. 2 Pedro Solberg Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil. This loss kept them out of the gold medal match, but they will take to the sand against No. 11 Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of The Netherlands to compete for bronze on July 14.
No. 4 Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) won their first match of the day against 14th-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of Netherlands, 21-17, 21-17 to move into Round 3 of elimination play. They then fell to Brouwer and Meeuwsen, 21-17, 21-15. Dalhausser and Rosenthal finish the Gstaad Grand Slam tied for fifth place.
In the women’s bracket, Brazil’s Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas De Freitas (No. 6) will take on China’s Chen Xue and Xi Zhang (No. 2) for gold, while No. 14 Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany battle No. 3 Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Taiana Lima of Brazil for the bronze. Both matches will take place on July 14.
