U.S. Well Represented at the World University Games

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 11, 2013) – Three U.S. beach volleyball teams secured top-ten finishes on the fourth day of competitionat the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

In the women’s quarterfinals, Germany’s Chantal Laboureur and Julia Katharina Sude snapped Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Georgia State) and Emily Stockman’s (Colorado Springs, Colo.; Wichita State) 4-0 winning streak in two sets (21-18, 21-19). Carico and Stockman  bounced back, sweeping Germany’s Isabel Schnider and Teresa Louise Mersmann (21-17, 21- 19).

From there, Carico and Stockman saw Russia’s Svetlana Popova and Mariia Prokopeva for the second time in the deciding sixth-place match. The Americans defeated Russia (24-22, 22-24, 15-11) in pool play on Monday. However Popova and Prokopeva topped Carico and Stockman the second time around (21-14, 21-19) to finish sixth, while Carico and Stockman placed seventh overall (5-2).

Popova and Prokopeva also defeated the U.S. women’s team of Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif.; USC) and Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.; Long Beach State) in the quarterfinals (21-19, 21-10). Robinson and Ledoux finished ninth in the tournament with a 3-3 record.

The U.S. men’s team of Will Montgomery (UC Irvine) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii; Southern California [USC]) reached the quarterfinals outlasting China’s Houcai Gond and Lei Li (21-18, 18-21, 15-13) in the second round of playoffs. Montgomery and Bourne dropped their quarterfinals match in two sets to Thailand’s Sittichai Sangkhachot and Prathip Sukto (25-27, 14-21).

On Friday, Montgomery and Bourne match up against Belarus’ Ailaksandr Dziadkou and Yauhen Vishneuski competing for a best-place finish of sixth.

In more men’s action, Jeff Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.; USC) and Connor Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.; UC Irvine) are 2-4 in the consolation bracket after falling to Israel’s Sean Faiga and Ariel Hilman in two sets and defeating Hong Kong’s Pui Lam Wong and Pok Man Yeung (21-19, 21-16).

Carlson and Hughes face Brazil’s Luan Candido and Leopoldo da Silva on Friday, competing for a best-place finish of 25.

The World University Games is an international multi-sport celebration of collegiate athletes organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The games serve as an international sporting and cultural festival similar to the Olympics staged every two years in a different city around the world. Volleyball is one of the 12 mandatory sports for the World University Games or Universiade with a maximum of three optional sports chosen by the host city. Winter and Summer Games are both held similar to the Olympics as well.

Women’s semifinal and finals matches are scheduled for July 11-12 and final matches are set for July 12.

Men’s semifinal matches will be played on July 12-13 with final matches wrapping up on July 13.
