COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 9, 2013) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Lane Carico and Emily Stockman enter the World University Games playoffs undefeated and two U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams joined the competition on Tuesday in Kazan, Russia.

On the women’s side, Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Georgia State) and Stockman (Colorado Springs, Colo.; Wichita State) enter the playoffs on Wednesday without dropping a match in the tournament (3-0). The pair grabbed their third victory on Tuesday by dominating Brazil’s Andreia da Silva and Jessica Silva in a two-set blowout (21-3, 21-5).

On the first day of preliminaries, Carico and Stockman defeated Russia’s Svetlana Popova and Mariia Prokopeva (24-22, 22-24, 15-11) and Norway’s Janne Aasland Pedersen and Vidle Joohanne Solvoll (21-13, 21-15).

For the men, the team of William Montgomery (UC Irvine) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii; Southern California [USC]) went 2-0 in the preliminary round after sweeping Norway’s Lars Tveit Retterholt and Svein Oddmund Solhaug in two sets (21-18, 21-16), and outlasted Russia’s Yaroslav Koshkarev and Konstantin Semenov in three sets (15-21, 23-21, 15-11).

Jeffery Carlson (USC) and Connor Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.; UC Irvine) dropped both matches on their first day. Poland’s Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz proved too much as they breezed past Carlson and Hughes in two sets (21-17, 21-18). However, Carlson and Hughes put up a fight against Italy’s Matteo Cecchili and Frederico Morichelli where the Americans came out ahead 24-22 in set one, but Cecchili and Morichelli claimed the next two (21-14, 15-11) to take the win.

The women’s team of Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif.; USC) and Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.; Long Beach State) are 1-2 overall after falling to Czech Republic’s Karolina Rehackova and Michala Kvapilova (21-19, 21-15) and Austria’s Magdalena Jirak and Lena Plesiutschnig in three sets (21-12, 21-14, 14-16).

Robinson and Ledoux swept Philippine’s Fiola Mae Ceballos and Jovelyn Gonzaga in two sets (21-13, 21-16) on Tuesday.

Carcio and Stockman match up against Austria’s Magdalena Jirak and Lena Plesiutschnig in Wednesday’s playoffs, while Robinson and Ledoux have not been matched with their opponent in the loser’s bracket.

On Wednesday, Carlson and Hughes face Turkey’s Hkan Gogtepe and Volkan Gogtepe, while Montgomery and Bourne compete against Brazil’s Luan Candido and Leopoldo da Silva in the last day of preliminaries.

The World University Games is an international multi-sport celebration of collegiate athletes organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The games serve as an international sporting and cultural festival similar to the Olympics staged every two years in a different city around the world. Volleyball is one of the 12 mandatory sports for the World University Games or Universiade with a maximum of three optional sports chosen by the host city. Winter and Summer Games are both held similar to the Olympics as well.
