World University Games Begin

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 8, 2013) – Two U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams began competition on Monday and will continue through July 13 at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

The team of Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif.; USC) and Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.; Long Beach State) won their first match in the preliminary round after sweeping the Philippines Fiola Mae Ceballos and Jovelyn Gonzaga in two sets (21-13, 21-16).

Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Georgia State) paired with Emily Stockman (Colorado Springs, Colo.; Wichita State) where they went 2-0 on the first day. In the three-set thriller, Carico and Stockman took the first set 24-22 over Russia’s Svetlana Popova and Mariia Prokopeva. However, Popova and Prokopeva came out ahead the second set 24-22, but Carico and Stockman  closed the door in set three to claim the 15-11 victory.

In their second match of the day, Carico and Stockman breezed past Norway’s Janne Aasland Pedersen and Vidle Joohanne Solvoll in two sets (21-13, 21-15).

Carico and Stockman match up with Brazil’s Andreia da Silva and Jessica Silva on Tuesday, while Robinson and Ledoux compete against Czech Republic’s Karolina Rehackova and Michala Kvapilova and Austria’s Magdalena Jirak and Lena Plesiutschnig.

The two U.S. men’s beach teams of Montgomery (UC Irvine) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii; Southern California [USC]) along with Carlson (USC) and Connor Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.; UC Irvine) are set to being their first competitions on Tuesday.

In their first match, Bourne and Carlson match up with Norway’s Lars Tveit Retterholt and Svein Oddmund Solhaug and also play Russia’s Yaroslav Koshkarev and Konstantin Semenov. Meanwhile, Carlson and Hughes face Poland’s Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz for their only match on Tuesday.
