16s Championship Titles Conclude 2013 GJNC

USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships Results/Schedules

DALLAS (July 5, 2013) – Five 16s teams took home championship titles Friday on the last day of the 2013 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships in the 16 Open, 16 National, 16 USA, 16 American and 16 Patriot Divisions.

The teams who were earned titles were Asics Mavs 16 Blue (Heart of America) in 16 Open, Ocala Power 16 Rox (Florida) in 16 National, Northern Lights (North Country) in 16 USA, Mavericks 900 16Black (Southern California) in the 16 American and KJ Baden 16-1 (Puget Sound) in 15 Patriot.

16 Open Division Championship

Asics Mavs 16 Blue faced Iowa Rocket 16R for the 16 Open title. In set one, the teams played point for point until Asics Mavs 16 Blue took a three-point lead at 22-19. However, Iowa Rockets 16R came back to tie it up at 22s. Both teams fought for the finals points, but Asics Mavs 16 Blue came out on top to take the first set 27-25.

It was an even playing field in the second set as the teams were tied at 10s. Hungry to for the title, Asics Mavs 16 Blue separated the score at 16-14. Iowa Rockets 16R struggled to respond as Asics Mavs 16 Blue went on a 9-4 run to capture the second set 25-18 and the 16 Open title.

To advance to the title match, Asics Mavs 16 Blue ,10-0 in the tournament, defeated Five Starz 16-1 (Northern California) 25-22, 25-18 in the semifinals while Iowa Rockets 16R (8-3) edged out Rancho Valley 16Premi (Southern California) 27-25, 23-25, 16-14.

16 National Division Championship

The 16 American gold-medal match pitted Premier 16 Black (North Texas) against Ocala Power 16 Rox (Florida) in a battle for the title. Premier 16 Black took an early 10-5 lead in the first set and continued to control the set at 20-16. Ocala Power 16 Rox came within two points to tie the game at 22-20, but was unable to close the gap as Premier 16 Black went on a 3-0 run to end set one 25-20.

Unwilling to give up, Ocala Power 16 Rox responded with a 14-8 lead in the second set. However, Premier 16 Black went on an 8-4 run to trail by only two points at 18-16. Ocala Power 16 Rox managed to keep the lead for the remainder of the set, taking the match into a third game with a 25-20 victory.

In the deciding set, the teams competed neck and neck, leaving the fans on the edge of their seats. Ocala Power 16 Rox had a four- point lead at 9-5 when Premier 16 Black called a timeout. Following the timeout, Premier went on a 3-1 run to close the gap to 10-8. However, Ocala Power 16 Rox carried out a 5-2 run to claim the third set 15-10 and the 16 National Division title.

Ocala Power 16 Rox (10-1) reached the 16 National championship match by defeating Ignite 16 Elite (Hoosier) 25-15, 26-28, 15-6 in the semifinals and Santa Barbara 16-Blue (Southern California) 25-22, 23-25, 15, 11 in the quarterfinals. Premier 16 Black, 8-3 in the tournament, earned its spot in the finals by winning its semifinal match over PVA 16 Elite (Heart of America) 25-27, 26-24, 17-15 and finished ahead of Epic 16-Sato (Southern California) 25-14, 18-25, 15-11 in the quarterfinals.

16 USA Championship

It was an all-North Country Region battle between Northern Lights 16-2 and Chaska Juniors 16-1 in the match for the 16 USA Division title. The title match bookended the tournament for both teams as Chaska Juniors 16-1 won the opening round Pool 4 match versus Northern Lights 16-2 in straight sets.

In the title rematch, Northern Lights 16-2 was off to a 12-6 lead after three consecutive kills from its outside hitter, Abigail Ihrke. Chaska Juniors 16-1 went on several runs in attempt to close the gap, but Northern Lights 16-2 broke away for a five-point lead at 20-15. Chaska Juniors 16-1 saved four set points to close the gap to 24-19, but Northern Lights 16-2 sided out to take the first set 20-25.

To start the second set, the score was tied up four different times in the first five points. Northern Lights 16-2 separated the score at 12-8, but Chaska Juniors 16-1 showed its ability to respond and went on a 5-0 run to take the lead 13-12. With momentum from the run, Chaska Juniors 16-1 took control of the set to lead 21-15 when Northern Lights 16-2 called a timeout. Despite a 3-0 Northern Lights 16-2 run, Chaska Juniors 16-1 finished the set 25-23.

It was a battle for the lead in the deciding set where the teams were tied at 9-9. Northern Lights 16-2 went on a two-point run to make the score 11-9. Chaska Juniors 16-1 took a timeout at 14-12 but Northern Lights 16-2 proved too handle much as they won16 Open title and the third set with a 15-13 victory.  

Northern Lights 16-2 (Northern), 8-2 in the tournament, earned its spot in the finals by winning its semifinal match over SDVBC 16-1 (Southern California) while Chaska Juniors 16-1 (8-2) reached the championship match by defeating AVJ 16 Mizuno (Lone Star) 25-15, 25-22.

16 American Championship

Mavericks 900 16Black faced Hou Skyline 16 RoShamBo in a battle for the 16 American title.  Mavericks 900 16Black came out hot in the first set cruising past Houston Skyline 16 RoShamBo 25-14.

Houston Skyline 16 RoShamBo showed their ability to respond in the second set with an early 11-6 lead. However, Mavericks 900 16Black fought to tie it up at 18s. The teams played point for point, but Houston Skyline 16 RoShamBo was determined to take the match to a third set, Houston Skyline 16 RoShamBo claimed the second set with a 25-23 win.

Neither team was going to let up easy in the deciding set as both teams battled for every point, tying the score at 14s. Mavericks 900 16Black carried out a two-point run to claim the 16-14 victory and the 16 American title.

Mavericks 900 16Black (Southern California), 10-0 in the tournament, finished ahead of CIS 16M (Iowa) 25-18, 25-17 in the semifinals and SG Elite 16Roshambo (Southern California) 25-14, 22-25, 15-11 in the quarterfinals.  Houston Skyline 16 RoShamBo (9-1) made it to the gold-medal match of the 16 American Division by defeating Main Beach Gold 16-1 (Northern California) 25-17, 25-10 in the semifinals and Ohio Xtreme 16s Ulland (Ohio Valley) 20-25, 25-21, 15-13 in the quarterfinals.

16 Patriot Division Championship

It was a showdown between KJ Baden 16-1 and Spiral 16 Black (Arizona) for the 16 Patriot Division title. In the first set, both teams competed, but KJ Baden 16-1 squeaked out to win the set 25-22. However, Spiral 16 Black responded to the previous loss to take the second set 25-16. Unwilling to give up, KJ Baden 16-1 brought back the first-set desire to take the final set 15-10, capturing the 16 Patriot Division title.

KJ Baden 16-1, which was 11-1 in the tournament, made it to the championships after defeating STL CYC 16 Green (Gateway) 21-25, 25-23, 15-11 in the semifinals and Freedom VBC 16 Purple (KE) 29-27, 25-17 in the quarterfinals. Spiral 16 Black, which was undefeated heading into the title match and finished 11-1, earned its championship place after defeating Dinamo 16 Elite Aideen (Arizona) 25-20, 25-21 in the semifinals and Instinct 16 W Tigers Wild (North Texas) 25-22, 25-5 in the quarterfinals.
