Five Beach Teams Left Playing at World Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 4, 2013) – Five U.S. teams are still competing after the completion of play on Thursday at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland.
In the women’s bracket, April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 3, along with No. 22 Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) advanced to Friday’s Round of 16.
On the men’s side, No. 3 Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), No. 4 Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) along with No. 17 Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) have advanced to the first round of single-elimination.
Ross and Pavlik defeated Switzerland’s No. 24 Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré, 21-18, 21-16 in 37 minutes in the first round on Thursday and will face Spain’s No. 10 Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan in Friday’s Round of 16.
Fendrick and Hochevar beat their U.S. compatriots No. 22 Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), 19-21, 21-13, 15-12 in 50 minutes on Thursday and will go up against Finland’s Emilia and Erika Nystrom on Friday. Fopma and Sweat finished tied for 17th.
The fourth U.S. women’s team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.), seeded No. 39, fell in the first round to Austrian sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger, seeded No. 18, 21-19, 21-19 in 38 minutes. Day and Ross also finished tied for 17th.
Dalhausser the Rogers won their final pool play match on Thursday, defeating Austria’s No. 22 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl, 22-20, 21-14 in 42 minutes. They will play Gibb and Patterson in Friday’s second round. Gibb and Patterson lost their final pool play match on Thursday, 21-18, 20-22, 15-8 in 52 minutes to Russia’s No. 21 Konstantin Semenov and Yaroslav Koshkarev.
Rogers and Doherty also lost their final pool play match on Thursday, 21-19, 21-13 in 37 minutes to Germany’s No. 8 Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik. They advanced to the first round where they will play Brazil’s No. 2 Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego.
The U.S. men’s team of Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and John Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) won their final pool play match on Thursday, beating Canada’s No. 40 Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk, 8-21, 22-20, 15-12 in 44 minutes.
Men’s pool play will conclude on July 4 with the first round of single elimination on July 5. The second round and quarterfinals will be played on July 6 with the semifinals and finals on July 7.
The women’s second round and quarterfinals will be played on July 5 and the semifinals and finals on July 6.
