Strong Day for U.S. Beach Teams at Worlds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 3, 2013) – U.S. teams gave strong performances on Wednesday at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland, with seven out of eight teams coming out victorious.

On the final day of pool play for the women, all four U.S. teams came away with victories and advanced to Thursday’s first round of single-elimination. For the men, three teams won on the second day of pool play.

The U.S. women’s pair of April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 3, finished pool play undefeated at 3-0 after defeating Netherlands’ No. 46 Laura Bloem and Rebekka Kadijk, 21-19, 21-15 in 37 minutes.

No. 22 Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) finished pool play at 2-1, beating Canada’s No. 27 Jamie Lynn Broder and Kristina Valjas on Wednesday, 21-16, 21-15 in 38 minutes.

No. 22 Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) defeated No. 45 Patricia Peña and Michelle Amarilla of Paraguay, 21-12, 21-13 in 33 minutes to finish pool play 2-1. Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.), seeded No. 39, also finished pool play at 2-1 after defeating Russia’s No. 34 Maria Prokopeva and Svetlana Popova, 21-11, 24-26, 15-10 in 46 minutes.

On Thursday, Fendrick and Hochevar will have to face Fopma and Sweat. April Ross and Pavlik will go up against Switzerland’s No. 24 Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré. Day and Summer Ross will Austrian sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger, seeded No. 18.

On the men’s second day of pool play, No. 3 Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) needed three sets to defeat No. 27 Sebastian Chevallier and Mats Kovatsch of Switzerland, 21-18, 20-22, 15-8 in 53 minutes and improve to 2-0 in Pool C.

No. 4 Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) rebounded from an upset on Tuesday to defeat Norway’s No. 28 Iver Andreas Horrem and Geir Eithun on Wednesday, 21-16, 21-16 in 38 minutes.

No. 17 Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) improved to 1-1 in Pool H by defeating Argentina’s No. 41 Pablo Bianchi and Facundo Del Coto, 21-18, 21-17 in 35 minutes.

The men’s bracket will complete pool play on Thursday. Dalhausser and Rosenthal will play Austria’s No. 22 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl. Gibb and Patterson will face Russia’s No. 21 Konstantin Semenov and Yaroslav Koshkarev.

Rogers and Doherty must go up against Germany’s No. 8 Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik. And finally, Lucena and Hyden will face Canada’s No. 40 Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk.

Men’s pool play will conclude on July 4 with the first round of single elimination on July 5. The second round and quarterfinals will be played on July 6 with the semifinals and finals on July 7.

The women’s second round and quarterfinals will be played on July 5 and the semifinals and finals on July 6.
