Seven More Teams Net Championship Titles at GJNC

DALLAS (July 2, 2013) – Seven more teams netted championship titles on day five of the 2013 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships in the 12 National and 12 American Divisions as well as the 17 Open, 17 National, 17 USA, 17 American and 17 Patriot Divisions.

The teams who took home the titles were TAV 17 Black (Lone Star) in 17 Open, Premier 17 Black (Lone Star) in17 National, AVJ 17 Cedar Park (Lone Star) in the 17 USA, SVVC 17-Christy (Southern California) in 17 American, PSVBA 17-1 (Puget Sound) in17 Patriot.Madfrog 12’s N Lew (North Texas) in12 National and Mintonette Sports – m.21 (Ohio Valley) in the 12 American.

17 Open Division Championship

It was a full house in the championship match faceoff between the home state team of TAV 17 Black (North Texas) and AVC Clev Rox 17 Phil (Ohio Valley).

In the first set, TAV 17 Black was off to a 12-5 early lead. AVC Clev Rox 17 Phil found its groove after its coach called a timeout and went on a five-point run to close the gap to 13-10. However, TAV 17 Black led the remainder of the match while AVC Clev Rox 17 Phil trailed by no more than five points. AVC battled for points, but struggled to close the six-point gap at 21-15, before TAV 17 Black closed out the first set 25-19.

It was a side-out battle during the second set where the score was tied 12 different times before either team reached 15 points. At 14-14, TAV 17 Black broke away with a five-point run to lead the set 19-14. AVC Clev Rox 17 Phil fought for points, but could not keep up with TAV 17 Black’s momentum, which claimed the 17 Open Division title with a 25-21 victory and handed AVC Clev Rox 17 Phil its only loss of the tournament. To advance to the title match, TAV 17 Black (10-1) defeated Coast 17-1 (Southern California) 18-25, 25-15,18-16 in the semifinals while AVC Clev Rox 17 Phil (9-1) edged out SG Elite 17Roshambo (Southern California) 25-20, 21-25 15-11.

17 National Division Championship

It was an even playing field throughout the first set of the 17 National Championship match between Premier 17 Black (North Texas) and Mintonette Sports – m.71 (Ohio Valley).

The teams played neck and neck as neither team led by more than three points throughout the set. Mintonette Sports – m.71 broke away for a 17-14 lead, but after Premier 17 Black won a long rally, it closed the gap to tie the score 17-17. As the brawl continued, the teams evened the score 23-23. Premier 17 Black claimed the final two points with two consecutive kills to take the set 25-23.

Premier 17 Black led 5-1 from the beginning of the second set while Mintonette Sports – m.71 struggled to handle the heat on #8 jump serve. Mintonette Sports – m.71 trailed chipped away but after two consecutive Mintonette Sports – m.71 service errors, Premier 17 Black went on an 8-3 run to finish out the set 25-16.

Premier 17 Black, which was 9-2 in the tournament, made it to the championships after defeating CIS 17M (Iowa) 18-25, 25-23, 15-12 in the semifinals and OVA 17 Molten (Florida) in the quarterfinals. Mintonette Sports – m.71, which finished 10-1, earned its championship match place after defeating AZ Revolution 17Premier (Arizona) 25-23, 25-19 in the semifinals and Goldenwest 17 Asics (Southern California) 25-18, 25-19 in the quarterfinals.

17 USA Division Championship

During the first championship match of the day, Sports Shack 17-Paul (Southern California) faced AVJ 17 Cedar Park (Lone Star) in vying for the 17 USA Championship title. Throughout the three-set thriller, it was clear that neither team was going to let up easy. AVJ 17 Cedar Park took the first set by a margin of four points (25-21), but Sports Shack 17-Paul bounced back to claim the tight second-set victory 26-24. Sports Shack 17-Paul put up a good fight in the final set, but AVJ 17 Cedar Park proved too much to handle, capturing the 15-11 victory and the 17 USA Championship title.

Sports Shack 17-Paul (9-1) earned its spot in the finals by winning its semifinal match over Ace 17 Smack Black (North Texas) in the semifinals, while AJV 17 Cedar Park (7-3) reached the championship match by defeating Northern lights 17-2 (North Country) 21-25, 25-23, 15-8.

17 American Division Championship

The 17 American gold-medal match pitted SVVC 17-Christy against KJ Baden 17-1 (PS) in a battle for the title. Set one showed equal talent of both teams, but SVVC 17-Christy broke away to take the first set 25-20. In a similar fashion, both team competed in the second set. After SVVC 17-Christy took a 23-19 lead, KJ Baden 17-1 could not battle back as they dropped the set 25-21.

SVVC 17-Christy, 10-1 in the tournament, finished ahead of FB Fire 17 Mizuno (Lone Star) 28-26, 25-22 in the semifinals and ECJ 17 Elite (OV) 25-22, 25-27, 15-11 in the quarterfinals. KJ Baden 17-1 was undefeated when it made it to the gold-medal match of the 12 American Division by defeating Topeka Impact 17-1 (Heart of America) 25-19, 25-23 in the semifinals and SA Force 171 Darkside (Lone Star) 25-23, 25-18 in the quarterfinals.

17 Patriot Division Championship

It was a showdown between PSVBA 17-1 and VB Academy 17 (Lone Star) for the 17 Patriot Division championship title. In the first set, PSVBA 17-1 came out with a bang, making the first set a quick one with a 25-15 win. VB Academy 17 competed hard in the second set, but struggled to finish in dropping the second set 25-27.

PSVBA 17-1, 9-2 in the tournament, defeated Aspire 17 Black (Arizona) 25-20, 25-17 in the semifinals while VB Academy 17 (8-3) advanced into the title match defeated Seattle Juniors 17 (PS) 25-19, 26-28, 15-9 in the semifinals.

12 National Division Championship

In set one of the 12 National Division championship match, TAV 12 Black (North Texas) was off with an early 7-3 lead, but Madfrog 12’s N Lew (North Texas) bounced back to tie it up 7-7. Both teams battled for control until the final points of the set where a momentum shift led Madfrog 12’s N Lew to a 25-21 first-set win.

With its eyes on the prize, Madfrog 12’s N Lew took control of the second set right from the start. Despite the opportunities, TAV 12 Black never spoke up. Madfrog 12’s N Lew showed no mercy as it captured the 12 National Division gold medal with an undefeated tournament record (11-0), winning the second set 25-10.

TVA 12 Black (8-3) reached the 12 National championship match by defeating Skyline 12 RSB Royal (North Texas) 22-25, 25-18, 15-7in the semifinals and Gainesville Nike 12 (Florida) 25-22, 25-20 in the quarterfinals. Madfrog 12’s N Lew earned its spot in the finals by winning its semifinal match versus Borinquen Coqui 12-1F (Puerto Rico) 25-20, 25-6 and finished ahead of Woodlands Wave 12UA (LS) 25-16, 25-17 in the quarterfinals.

12 American Division Championship

Mintonette Sports – m.21 matched up against Wave 12Jade (Southern California) in the 12 American Division Championship match. Wave 12Jade came out strong in the first set, cruising past Mintonette Sports – m.21 25-16. However, Mintonette Sports – m.21 showed its ability for bounce back from the previous set as it captured a 25-23 second-set win. Mintonette Sports – m.21 carried over its momentum in the third and final set where claimed the12 American Division tile, with a 15-9 victory.

Mintonette Sports – m.21, 11-0 in the tournament, finished ahead of Skyline 12 RSB Royal (North Texas) 25-13, 25-17 in the semifinals and Madfrogs 11’a N Brown (North Texas) in the quarterfinals. Wave 12Jade (9-2) made it to the gold-medal match of the 12 American Division by defeating Tejas 12 Nfinity (North Texas) 25-18, 25-14 in the semifinals and Victory 12Elite Black (North Texas) 25-14, 25-20 in the quarterfinals.
