WNT A2 Roster and Schedule

DALLAS (July 2, 2013) - Talking with the 47 college players participating in the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, you’d hear a variety of stories on how they started playing the game. One of the most unique stories belongs to Deedra Foss (McKenna, Wash.).

Foss, a redshirt junior setter at Colorado State University, isn’t just gifted on the court. She is wicked with numb chucks too.

“My mom signed my sister and me up for karate when we were five,” Foss said. “She wanted us to know self-defense so she wouldn’t have to worry about us as much if we were alone.”

Foss excelled at karate, earning her black belt by the age of 10, along with a No. 1-ranking in the state of Washington.

It was her karate coach that introduced her to volleyball.

“He was also the high school volleyball coach,” Foss said. “He encouraged my twin sister and I to start playing volleyball. We did and we loved it.”

Foss played club volleyball and continued in karate until her freshman year of high school when she realized she couldn’t do both because of the time commitment.

“I chose volleyball,” Foss said. “I still know all of my karate though. Don’t worry!”

Foss and her sister both continued in volleyball, and pursued collegiate careers. For Foss, the volleyball journey won’t end post-college though.

“I want to play overseas,” Foss said. “I love this sport. It is my passion.”

It isn’t just anywhere that Foss wants to play, either. A club volleyball trip when she was 13 left her with an adamant desire to play professionally in Brazil.

“I went to play in Brazil when I was 13,” Foss said. “I was actually with an 18s team playing, which was scary. I just fell in love with Brazil though. It is my dream to play there someday.”

Though Foss is all about volleyball now, she values her karate background and the exposure it gave her to another niche of the world.

“I am so happy that was a part of my upbringing,” Foss said. “I feel doing so much as a kid left me with a wide variety of skills. Plus, it was karate that ultimately led me to volleyball.”
