Winners Crowned in the 14s Divisions at BJNC
RENO, Nev. (July 1, 2013) – Gold-medal action continued at the 2013 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships on Monday inside the Reno-Sparks Events Center as Borinquen Coqui 14-1M (San Juan, Puerto Rico) took home the top prize in 14 Open and Southside B14 (Moku O Keawe Region) was crowned champion in the 14 Club division.
The 14 Open division had Borinquen Coqui 14-1M facing off against Seaside 14 Black (San Diego, Calif., Southern California Region).

Borinquen Coqui 14-1M jumped out to an early lead in the first set, leading 10-4. Seaside 14 Black narrowed the gap to 12-11 and tied the score on an attack error by Borinquen Coqui 14-1 M. Seaside 14 Black took its first lead of the match at 17-16 and grew it from there, leading 20-16. Borinquen Coqui 14-M fought its way back to within a point, but Seaside 14 Black was able to hang on and win the set 25-21. This was the first set Borinquen Coqui 14-1M lost in the tournament.
Set two was a different story entirely and belonged to Borinquen Coqui 14-1M from the get-go, as it quickly surged out to a 17-4 lead. Seaside 14 Black was unable to sustain any offensive momentum and Borinquen Coqui took set two 25-8.
Borinquen Coqui 14-1M controlled the third set early, leading 4-0. Seaside 14 Black put a few points on the board, but still trailed 8-3 before a huge block swung the momentum in its favor. The score was soon knotted at nine all. Borinquen Coqui 14-1M stormed to a 14-9 lead with five unanswered points, but Seaside 14 saved three match points to keep its gold medal hopes alive. However, Borinquen Coqui 14-1M was able to paint the line with a final kill to win the set 15-12 and take home a 2-1 victory.
Borinquen Coqui 14-1M went a perfect 11-0 during the tournament, doing so without losing a single set until the finals. Seaside 14 Black earned a record of 8-3 on its way to the gold medal match, and fell to Borinquen Coqui 14-1M in their previous matchup on June 29.
Claiming bronze were Spectrum 14’s (Thousand Oaks, Calif., Southern California Region) and Mountain View Volleyball Club 14 Red (Sunnyvale, Calif., Northern California Region)
The 14 Club championship match pitted Southside B14 (Pahala, Hawaii) against Pittsburgh 14 Black (Pittsburgh, Pa., Keystone Region).
It was a tight match from the start as the teams went point-for-point. It looked as though Southside B14 finally had an advantage with a 10-8 lead, but Pittsburgh evened things back up at 11 apiece with a spectacular defensive play. Southside B14 managed to take the lead again and built itself a late cushion, leading by as many as eight points and taking the first set 25-17.

The second set began as hotly contested as the first, with neither team being able to eke out a lead. Southside B14 finally managed to earn a slight 11-7 edge. Pittsburgh 14 Black was able to keep things close until Southside B14 stormed out to a 20-11 advantage. Pittsburgh 14 Black managed several late scores as Southside B14 had match point, keeping gold medal hopes alive. But Southside B14’s lead was too much to recover from, and they took the final set 25-17 to win the match 2-0.
“I called a time-out right before the last point to tell the boys that they were about to win a championship for the state of Hawaii,” Southside B14 Head Coach Samuel Thomas said. “[In Hawaii] there are different islands and counties, but once there’s a Hawaii team winning something somewhere, it becomes something for the whole state to enjoy.”
Southside B14 went undefeated at the BJNC, racking up a perfect 12-0 record during the championship and losing a mere two sets. Pittsburgh 14 Black went 10-1, with its only loss coming at the hands of Southside B14 in the teams’ previous meeting on June 29.
The teams of Team Rockstar 14-1 (Carson, Calif., Southern California) and Ku’ikahi 14R RoShamBo (Honolulu, Hawaii, Aloha) won bronze.
