COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 1, 2013) – Two upsets and a match between two U.S. teams highlighted the first day of women’s pool play at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships on Monday in Stare Jablonky, Poland.
On Monday in Pool K, the U.S. team of Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.), seeded No. 39, upset Spain’s No. 10 Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan, 21-14, 17-21, 10-15 in 48 minutes.
In Pool D, Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 28, beat Kazakhstan’s No. 21 Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova, 21-15, 21-17 in 37 minutes.
In Pool C, No. 3-seeded April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) defeated U.S. teammates No. 22-seeded Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), 21-15, 21-15 in 36 minutes.
Women’s pool play will continue on Tuesday. Ross and Pavlik will face Canada’s No. 27 Jamie Lynn Broder and Kristina Valjas. Fendrick and Hochevar will take on Netherlands’ No. 46 Laura Bloem and Rebekka Kadijk.
Fopma and Sweat will play Netherlands’ No. 4 Madelein Meppelink and Sophie van Gestel. Day and Ross will take on No. 15 Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova of Czech Republic.
Men’s pool play will also begin on Tuesday. No. 3 Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Fla.) will open play in Pool C against Mexico’s No. 46 Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros. No. 4 Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) will begin in Pool D against No. 45 Popov Sergiy and Valeriy Samoday of Ukraine.
In Pool H, No. 17-seeded Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) will play Venezuela’s No. 32 Igor Hernandez and Jesus Villafañe. In Pool J, No. 33 Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and John Hyden will open against Germany’s No. 16 Sebastian Fuchs and Thomas Kaczmarek.
Men’s pool play will conclude on July 4 with the first round of single elimination on July 5. The second round and quarterfinals will be played on July 6 with the semifinals and finals on July 7.
Women’s pool play will finish on July 3. The first round will be played July 4, followed by the second round and quarterfinals on July 5 and the semifinals and finals on July 6.
