U.S. Men's Update: CEV Cups Heat Up
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 22, 2013) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.
CEV CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
U.S. middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), a 2008 and 2012 Olympian, U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Zenit Kazan will advance to the next round of the Champions League after defeating U.S. setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Germany’s Berlin Recycling Volleys twice in the Round of 12. On Jan. 16, Kazan defeated host Berlin, 27-25, 23-25, 17-25, 25-16, 18-16. Anderson finished with 14 points on 13 kills (56.5 kill percent, .478 hitting efficiency) and one block. He also led all players in receptions with 21, 76 percent positive and 38 percent excellent. Lee scored 13 points on seven attacks (50.0 kill percent, .429 hitting efficiency) and a match-high six blocks. Shoji scored four points on two kills, one block and one ace. He set Berlin to a 48.8 kill percent and a .449 hitting efficiency.
On Jan. 22, Kazan again needed five sets to defeat visiting Berlin, 25-15, 21-25, 28-30, 25-13, 16-14. Anderson scored 20 points on 18 kills (52.9 kill percent, 47.1 hitting efficiency), one block and one ace. Lee added 14 points on nine kills (81.8 kill percent, .818 hitting efficiency), four blocks and one ace. Shoji scored four points on two kills, one block and one ace and set Berlin to a 43.7 kill percent and a .349 hitting efficiency. Kazan will play the winner of the series between Russia’s Dinamo Moscow and Italy’s Trentino Diatec in the next round.
In the 12-team playoff, U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, and Arkas Izmir Spor will play Poland’s PGE Skra Belchatow on Jan. 23 in Poland.
U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Asseco Resovia Rzeszow will play Italy’s Lube Banca Marche Macerata on Jan. 23 in Italy.

U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his French league team Tours defeated visiting Russia’s Lokomotiv Kharkiv, 25-15, 26-24, 25-22 on Jan. 16. Smith scored four points on three attacks and one block. The two teams will play again on Jan. 23 in Russia.
U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.; in photo at right) and visiting Andreoli Latina defeated Germany’s Generali Unterhaching, 25-23, 25-18, 26-24 on Jan. 16 in Germany. Troy played as a substitute and started the third set, scoring 11 points on 10 kills (50.0 kill percent, .500 hitting efficiency) and one ace. The two teams will play again on Jan. 24 in Italy.
U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), a 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympian, and host Halkbank Ankara defeated Belgium’s Knack Roeselare, 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 on Jan. 16. Priddy led all players with 16 points on a match-high 13 attacks (76.5 kill percent, .765 hitting efficiency), one block and two aces. He was also credited with 11 receptions, 82 percent positive. The two teams will play again on Jan. 23 in Belgium.
CEV CHALLENGE CUP
U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Copra Elior Piacenza defeated Bulgaria’s host CVC Gabrovo, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 on Jan. 16 in Bulgaria. Holt led all scorers with 13 points.
Reid Priddy and his Turkish league team Halkbank Ankara defeated Galatasaray, 28-26, 25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 15-13 on Jan. 19. Priddy scored 15 points on 11 attacks and a match-high four blocks. He was also credited with 14 receptions, 64 percent positive.
U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.), a 2004 Olympian, and Istanbul BBSK defeated 4 Eylül Bld., 25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 28-26. Billings led all scorers with 27 points on 25 attacks (71.4 kill percent, .629 hitting efficiency) and two aces.
Matt Anderson led his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan to a 25-21, 27-25, 25-21 victory over Iskra Odintsovo on Jan. 19. Anderson led all scorers with 21 points on 20 kills (71.4 kill percent, .679 hitting efficiency) and one ace. He was also credited with 17 receptions, 47 percent positive. U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated Indykpol AZS Olsztyn, 34-32, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21 on Jan. 18. Holmes scored 10 points on six kills, one block and three aces. To view photos from the match, click here.
Paul Lotman and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów fell to Effector Kielce, 25-19, 24-26, 21-25, 27-25, 16-14 on Jan. 19. Lotman scored 11 points on 10 attacks and one block. He was also credited with 28 receptions, 57 percent positive.
U.S. setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania), a 2004 and ’12 Olympian, and his Argentina league team Drean Bolívar went 2-0 last week. On Jan. 17, Bolívar beat Gigantes del Sur, 25-16, 29-27, 25-18. Suxho scored five points on two kills, two blocks and one ace. He also set his team to a 51.7 kill percent and a .393 hitting efficiency. On Jan. 20, Bolívar beat Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19. Suxho started the first set, but did not score and did not play after that.
Kawika Shoji and his German league team the Berlin Recycling Volleys defeated VC Dresden, 25-12, 25-20, 25-17 on Jan. 19. To view photos from the match, click here. U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 Olympian, also plays for Berlin, but is currently rehabilitating from knee surgery.
U.S. outside hitter Robert Tarr (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) and middle blocker Matt Rawson (Los Angeles) and their French league team Cannes defeated Tourcoing, 28-26, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19 on Jan. 19. Tarr started the first two sets and scored four points on three attacks and one block. Rawson started the first two sets and scored one point on one block.
The French league team Toulouse, including U.S. opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) and middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.), fell to Rennes, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 on Jan. 19. Patak finished with nine points on seven attacks and two aces. Hein added three points on one kill and two blocks.
U.S. opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.), libero Alfee Reft (Oxnard, Calif.) and their French league team Montpellier fell to Nantes Rezé, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19 on Jan. 19. Clark led his team with 10 points on 10 attacks. Reft was credited with 18 receptions, 61 percent positive.
In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) fell to Cambrai, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 26-24 on Jan. 19. Scott scored 12 points on nine kills and three blocks. He was also credited with 57 receptions, 86 percent positive. Vance added nine points on eight attacks and one ace. Watten was credited with 17 receptions, 76 percent positive.
In Italy’s Serie A league, U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Copra Elior Piacenza defeated Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia, 29-27, 33-31, 25-19 on Jan. 20. Holt scored six points on three kills and three blocks. Piacenza is in third place in the league.
Murphy Troy and Andreoli Latina fell to Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo, 25-23, 25-21, 40-38 on Jan. 20. Troy played as a substitute and scored one point on one attack.
In Italy’s Serie A2 league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) and Sieco Service Ortona fell to Conad Reggio Emilia, 21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-9 on Jan. 20. Muagututia scored 12 points on 10 attacks and two blocks. He was also credited with 31 receptions, 65 percent positive.
