U.S. Men's Update: Patak Playing in France

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 15, 2013) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.

FRANCE

U.S. opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) has joined middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) on the French league team Toulouse, which defeated U.S. opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.), libero Alfee Reft (Oxnard, Calif.) and their French league team Montpellier, 25-17, 25-15, 17-25, 25-17, 15-13 on Jan. 12. Patak led his team with 20 points on 14 attacks, three blocks and three aces. Hein scored eight points on five kills and three blocks. Clark led Montpellier with 20 points on 19 kills and one block. Reft was credited with 27 receptions, 63 percent excellent. Patak also helped Toulouse to a 25-14, 27-25, 25-23 victory over Nantes Reze in Cup of France play on Jan. 8.

In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) fell to PI-Robinson, 25-15, 29-31, 25-21, 25-17 on Jan. 12. Orange’s roster included only eight players. Vance scored seven points on five attacks, one block and one ace. He was also credited with 13 receptions, 77 percent positive. Scott scored four points on four attacks. He was credited with 31 receptions, 71 percent positive. Watten was credited with 15 receptions, 60 percent positive.

POLAND

U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, defeated Wkręt-met AZS Częstochowa, 25-13, 25-20, 25-20 on Jan. 12. Lotman finished with six points on five attacks and one ace. He was also credited with 25 receptions, 56 percent excellent.

U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Jastrzębski Węgiel fell to ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle, 25-20, 25-14, 25-19 on Jan. 13. Holmes scored five points on three kills and two blocks. To view photos from the match, click here.

RUSSIA

U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) and his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan went 2-0 in their last two matches. On Jan. 9, Kazan defeated Prikame Perm, 25-8, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20. Anderson started the first two sets and scored four points on three attacks and one ace. To view photos, click here. On Jan. 12, Kazan beat Ural Ufa, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21. Anderson substituted in the third set and started the fourth, finishing with seven points on four attacks and three aces. ITALY

In Italy’s Serie A league, U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Copra Elior Piacenza fell to Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata, 21-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-21 on Jan. 12. Holt scored seven points on three kills, three blocks and one ace.

U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) and Andreoli Latina defeated Altotevere San Giustino, 32-30, 25-23, 25-23 on Jan. 13. Troy played as a substitute but did not score. U.S. setter Riley McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii) is on the roster for San Giustino, but did not play in the match.

BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte, including U.S. outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.) fell to Sir Safety Perugia, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-15 on Jan. 13. Menzel played as a substitute and scored one point on one attack.

In Italy’s Serie A2 league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) and Sieco Service Ortona defeated Caffè Aiello Corigliano, 17-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 15-13 on Jan. 13. Muagututia scored 16 points on 14 kills (58.3 kill percent, .427 hitting efficiency) and two blocks. He was credited with 26 receptions, 46 percent positive.

ARGENTINA

U.S. setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania), a 2004 and ’12 Olympian, and his Argentina league team Drean Bolívar fell to Buenos Aires, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 16-14 on Jan. 13. Suxho scored four points in the loss.

TURKEY

U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), a 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympian, and his Turkish league team Halkbank Ankara defeated Maliye Milli Piyango S., 25-19, 25-19, 17-25, 25-19 on Jan. 13. Priddy finished with 12 points on 11 attacks and one block. He was credited with 13 receptions, 54 percent positive.

U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.), a 2004 Olympian, and Istanbul BBSK defeated Ziraat Bankasi on Jan. 12, 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 15-13 on Jan. 12. Billings finished with 15 points on 14 kills and one block.

U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, helped Arkas Izmir Spor to a 25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 25-20 victory over Gümüşhane Torul Gençlik on Jan. 11. Hansen played as a substitute and did not score.

CEV CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

In the 12-team playoff, Kevin Hansen and Arkas Izmir Spor fell to Poland’s visiting PGE Skra Belchatow, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-13 on Jan. 15. Hansen did not score and set the team to a 45.7 kill percent and a .362 hitting efficiency. The teams will play again on Jan. 23 in Poland.

Paul Lotman and Asseco Resovia Rzeszow fell to Italy’s visiting Lube Banca Marche Macerata, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19 on Jan. 15. Lotman scored seven points on five kills and two blocks. He was also credited with 16 receptions, 50 percent positive. The teams will play again on Jan. 23 in Italy.

U.S. outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Slovenia’s ACH Volley Ljubljana fell to Italy’s visiting Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 on Jan. 15. Jablonsky started the first two sets and scored three points on two kills and one block. He was also credited with 11 receptions, 82 percent positive.

On Wednesday (Jan. 16), U.S. middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), a 2008 and 2012 Olympian, and Matt Anderson and Zenit Kazan will play U.S. setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Germany’s Berlin Recycling Volleys in Germany. Due to rules in the Russian Super League limiting the number of foreign players a team can play, Lee only plays for Kazan in its CEV Champions League matches. U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) also plays for Berlin, but is currently rehabilitating after knee surgery.

CEV CUP

Murphy Troy and Andreoli Latina will play Germany’s Generali Unterhaching on Wednesday (Jan. 16) in Germany. Reid Priddy and Halkbank Ankara will play Belgium’s Knack Roeselare on Wednesday (Jan. 16) in Turkey. U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) and his French league team Tours will host Russia’s Lokomotiv Kharkiv on Wednesday (Jan. 16).

CEV CHALLENGE CUP

Max Holt and Copra Elior Piacenza will play Bulgaria’s CVC Gabrovo on Wednesday (Jan. 16) in Bulgaria.
