U.S. Men's Update: Shojis Meet Again
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 8, 2013) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.
Setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and his German league team the Berlin Recycling Volleys defeated CV Mitteldeutschland, which includes his brother, libero Erik Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii), and their former Stanford teammate Brad Lawson (Honolulu, Hawaii), 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 on Jan. 6. It was the second time the two teams have played this season. Berlin also won the first contest in November. On Jan. 6, Kawika Shoji scored three points on one block and two aces. He also set Berlin to a 50.7 kill percent and a .394 hitting efficiency. Lawson scored six points on five attacks and one ace for Mitteldeutschland and Erik Shoji was credited with 11 receptions, 45 percent positive. To view highlights of the match, click here. U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 Olympian, who also plays for Berlin, had knee surgery on Jan. 2 and is scheduled to be out of action for about six weeks. UPDATED INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER LIST: USA Volleyball has released its updated international transfer list allowing United States citizens to compete in foreign professional leagues for the 2012-2013 club season. As of Jan. 7, USA Volleyball has processed 168 female and 94 male international transfer certificates with some additional transfers pending. A total of 262 total transfer certificates have been processed. For a full listing of the transfers, click here.
In Italy’s Serie A league, U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Copra Elior Piacenza defeated Altotevere San Giustino, including U.S. setter Riley McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii), 25-16, 21-25, 25-12, 25-18 on Jan. 6. Holt scored 12 points on five attacks (71.4 kill percent, .571 hitting efficiency), a match-high six blocks and one ace. McKibbin started only the first set for San Giustino and did not score.
U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) and Andreoli Latina defeated Marmi Lanza Verona, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 on Jan. 6. Troy played as a substitute but did not score.
In Italy’s Serie A2 league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) and Sieco Service Ortona fell to Tonazzo Padova, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17. Muagututia led his team with 12 points on 12 attacks. He was also credited with 17 receptions, 41 percent positive.
U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, defeated Delecta Bydgoszcz, 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 on Jan. 4. Lotman scored 13 points on 13 kills (56.5 kill percent, .565 hitting efficiency) and was credited with 22 receptions, 41 percent positive.
U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated PGE Skra Bełchatów, 25-22, 25-20, 28-26 on Jan. 4. Holmes scored two points on two attacks. To view photos from the match, click here.
U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) and his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan do not play again until Jan. 9. However, Kazan has posted a YouTube video profile and interview with Anderson. To view it, click here.
U.S. libero Alfee Reft (Oxnard, Calif.) and his French league team Montpelier fell to Narbonne, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21 on Jan. 5. Reft was credited with 17 receptions, 42 percent positive. U.S. opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.) is also on the roster for Montpellier, but did not play in the match.
U.S. middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) and his French team Toulouse fell to Tourcoing, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 26-24 on Jan. 4. Hein scored four points on four attacks.
In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) defeated Canteleu, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-13 on Jan 5 with only nine players on the roster. Scott scored 14 points on eight attacks, a match-high four blocks and two aces. He was also credited with 30 receptions, 73 percent positive. Vance scored 13 points on 10 attacks, one block and two aces. He was also credited with nine receptions, 63 percent positive. Watten was credited with 32 receptions, 59 percent positive.
