U.S. Men's Update: CEV Cups Continue
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 20, 2013) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.
SATO TO COACH JAPAN
Gary Sato (Los Angeles, Calif.), 58, has been hired to serve as head coach for the Japanese Men’s National Volleyball Team. Sato will be the first foreign coach ever for a Japanese men’s or women’s national team.
Sato served as the assistant coach under Alan Knipe for the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team from 2009-12.
Sato first served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s Team from 1984-88, including the team that won the 1988 Olympic gold medal in Seoul. His brother, Eric, was a player on that team. He was also an assistant for the teams that won the 1986 World Championship and the 1987 Pan American Games.
Sato served as head coach for the U.S. Men’s gold-medal win at the 1985 FIVB World Cup in Japan and was voted the Most Valuable Coach of the tournament. In 1992 he returned as assistant coach for the Olympic Team that won the bronze medal.
CEV CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
In the Champions League six-team playoff, Russia’s Zenit Kazan, which includes U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), a 2012 Olympian, along with U.S. middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), a 2008 and 2012 Olympian, advanced to the semifinals by winning a second match over Dinamo Moscow, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 on Feb. 13 in Moscow. Anderson led all scorers with 19 points. Lee added five. Kazan will play fellow Russian Super League team Lokomotiv Novosibirsk in the semifinals, which will be played on March 16 in Omsk, Russia.
U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, and Arkas Izmir Spor were eliminated from the Champions’ Cup after losing a second match to Poland’s visiting Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19 on Feb. 12. Hansen scored two points on two kills. He set the team to a 50.5 kill percent and a .438 hitting efficiency.

U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), a 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympian, and Turkey’s Halkbank Ankara will face U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) and Italy’s Andreoli Latina in the final of the CEV Cup. The teams will play on March 27 in Italy and on March 3 in Turkey.
Ankara advanced by winning its second CEV Cup semifinal match, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 over Ukraine’s Lokomotiv Kharkiv on Feb. 13. Priddy scored nine points on seven attacks and two blocks. He was credited with 12 receptions, 42 percent excellent.
Troy and Andreoli Latina defeated Turkey’s Maliye Milli Piyango Ankara, 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 on Feb. 13. Latina then had to win a “golden set” 15-11 to break the 1-1 match tie with Ankara. Troy did not play in the match.

CEV CHALLENGE CUP
U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Copra Elior Piacenza of Italy will advanced to the semifinals of the CEV Challenge Cup after defeating Stroitel Minsk of Belarus in their second quarterfinal match, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 on Feb. 13. Holt scored seven points on five attacks (55.6 kill percent, .556 hitting efficiency) and two blocks. Holt scored nine points on six attacks (66.7 kill percent, .667 hitting efficiency), one block and two aces. Piacenza will play Dukla Liberec of Czech Republic in the semifinals. The first match will be in Italy on Feb. 26 or 27. The second match will be in Czech Republic on March 2.

U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and the French league team Tours continued to lead the league after a 25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 25-29 victory over Rennes on Feb. 16. Smith scored 10 points on seven attacks and three blocks.
The French league team Toulouse, including U.S. opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) and middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.), defeated Nantes Reze, 25-21, 27-25, 27-25 on Feb. 16. Patak led all scorers with 23 points on 19 attacks (59.4 kill percent, .563 hitting efficiency), three blocks and one ace. Hein added nine points on five kills and a match-high four blocks.
U.S. opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.), libero Alfee Reft (Oxnard, Calif.) and Montpellier defeated Avignon, 22-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-21 on Feb. 16. Clark scored 19 points on 17 attacks and two blocks. Reft was credited with 35 receptions, 60 percent excellent.
U.S. outside hitter Robert Tarr (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) and middle blocker Matt Rawson (Los Angeles) and Cannes fell to Narbonne, 22-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9 on Feb. 16. Rawson scored six points on five attacks and one ace. Tarr started only the first set and scored four points on four kills.
In the semifinals of the French Cup, Tours defeated Montpellier, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19, while Toulouse beat Narbonne, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 on Feb. 19. Tours will play Toulouse in the final on March 30.
In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) defeated Asnières, 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 15-11 on Feb. 16. Vance scored 16 points on 12 attacks, two blocks and two aces. Scott added 10 points on six kills, two blocks and two aces. He was credited with 66 receptions, 48 percent positive. Watten was credited with 18 receptions, 61 percent positive.
U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Jastrzębski Węgiel won their first two Plus Liga playoff matches against Effector Kielce. On Feb. 15, Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated Effector Kielce, 25-20, 25-17, 25-21. Holmes scored eight points on five attacks (83.3 kill percent, .833 hitting efficiency), two blocks and one ace. Holmes scored nine points on eight kills (72.7 kill percent, .636 hitting efficiency) and one block. The teams will play again on Feb. 23.
U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Polish league team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów won their first two playoff matches over PGE Skra Bełchatów in a rematch of last year’s league final. On Feb. 17, Resovia Rzeszów beat Bełchatów, 18-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-18. Lotman started the final three sets and scored 10 points on seven attacks (63.6 kill percent, .636 hitting efficiency), two blocks and one ace. He was credited with 14 receptions, 21 percent positive. To view photos from the match, click here. On Feb. 18, Resovia Rzeszów defeated Bełchatów, 25-27, 25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 16-14. Lotman scored nine points on seven kills, one block and one ace. He was credited with 37 receptions, 49 percent positive.
U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.), a 2004 Olympian, and Istanbul BBSK defeated Arkas Izmir Spor, the team of Kevin Hansen, 25-22, 33-35, 25-17, 25-18 on Feb. 16. Billings finished with 21 points on 18 attacks (52.9 kill percent, .500 hitting efficiency), two blocks and one ace. Hansen did not play in the match.
Reid Priddy and Halkbank Ankara defeated Greenwich Saat TED Kolejliler, 25-18, 21-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-10 on Feb. 16. Priddy substituted in the second set and started the final three sets. He finished with 10 points on nine attacks and one block. He was credited with 11 receptions, 55 percent positive.
U.S. setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania), a 2004 and ’12 Olympian, and his Argentina league team Drean Bolívar fell to Buenos Aires Unidos, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 16-14. Suxho scored four points on four attacks. He set Bolívar to 47.3 kill percent and a .405 hitting efficiency.
Matt Anderson and his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan defeated Shakhtar Soligorsk, 25-16, 25-10, 25-15. Anderson scored two points in the match. Anderson will play in the Super League All-Start match on Feb. 23.
Max Holt and his Italian league team Copra Elior Piacenza defeated Sir Safety Perugia, 22-25, 25-21, 28-26, 26-24 on Feb. 17. Holt scored six points on four kills, one block and one ace.
Murphy Troy and Andreoli Latina beat Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 25-19 on Feb. 17. Troy played as a substitute but did not score.
In Italy’s Serie A2 league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) and Sieco Service Ortona beat Pallavolo Loreto, 25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-12 on Feb. 17. Muagututia scored 19 points on 17 attacks and two blocks. He was credited with 39 receptions, 44 percent positive.
