COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 22, 2013) – The U.S. women’s beach team of Kelly Schumacher and Summer Ross upset Russia’s No. 1 seed to go 1-1 on the first day of pool play at the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam on Thursday in Russia.

In the first match of the day, Schumacher and Ross, seeded No. 32 in the main draw, upset Russia’s No. 1 Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova, 21-17, 14-21, 19-17.

The Americans bounced back from a second-set hiccup to battle for the victory in set three. Schumacher and Ross warded off a couple of Russian match points to claim victory.

“We just never gave up, served tough,” Schumacher said in an FIVB press release. “In the second set we started letting up on our serve a little bit. We tried to focus on that in the third and it helped us out.

“It was a tough match though. They are a really good team. This is my first FIVB event so I really don’t know what to measure it to yet. But we just tried to come out hard and play as well as we could and it paid off.”

Ross and Schumacher came up short in their second match to Austria’s Barbra Hansel and Katharina Schutzenhofer, seeded No. 16,  in a three-set dual (18-21, 21-19, 15-8).

Ross and Schumacher earned their spot in the main draw in the qualification round on Wednesday defeating Chile’s Maria Francisca Rivas Zapata and Camila Pazdirek Peteri , 21-11, 21-11. The pair matches up against Switzerland’s No. 17 seed, Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre, in the second day of pool play on Friday.
